Chapter 10 - The Man Between Two Lies.

Cole’s agents immediately moved toward Ryan.

Ryan lifted both hands.

“I didn’t receive that.”

“It was sent to your encrypted account,” Michael said.

“An account Evelyn controls.”

Michael shook his head.

“Wrong encryption.”

Ryan stared at the screen.

Then his expression changed.

“Rebecca.”

Lisa crossed her arms.

“You just said she and Evelyn were loyal to each other.”

“I believed they were.”

“Convenient.”

Ryan looked at her.

“You think I arranged getting tied to a chair and beaten?”

“I think you’ve lied to me professionally for years.”

Ryan had no answer.

Cole ordered his phone seized.

Technical analysis began immediately.

Within minutes investigators confirmed the message had been sent to an account created twelve years earlier.

Before Ryan met Lisa.

Cole asked.

“Who created it?”

Ryan looked toward Michael.

“Rebecca.”

“And why?”

“Because I worked for her before I worked for Evelyn.”

Lisa felt another layer drop away.

Ryan closed his eyes.

“I was twenty-six.”

“I had just left active service.”

“Rebecca approached me through a veteran intelligence network.”

“She said Gray Lantern protected agents abandoned by the government.”

“At first, that was true.”

“When did it become criminal?”

“It already was.”

“I just didn’t see it.”

“And you helped anyway.”

“Yes.”

Lisa absorbed the admission.

Ryan was no innocent infiltrator.

He had chosen Gray Lantern before he had chosen her.

Cole asked.

“What is Phase Three?”

Ryan stared at the message.

“I don’t know.”

Michael laughed without humor.

“You expect us to believe that?”

“I knew about Phase One and Two.”

“What were they?”

“Phase One was integration.”

“Marriage.”

“Yes.”

“Phase Two?”

“Corporate acquisition.”

Lisa stared at him.

Ryan continued.

“Sentinel Meridian was supposed to become Gray Lantern’s legal technology arm.”

“You were going to steal my company.”

“Originally.”

“And Phase Three?”

Ryan looked genuinely frightened.

“Rebecca never told me.”

Lisa’s phone rang.

Natalie.

She answered immediately.

Natalie sounded weak.

“I remembered something.”

“What?”

“When Rebecca recruited me, she used a phrase.”

Lisa glanced toward Ryan.

“What phrase?”

“Phase Three.”

The room became silent.

“What did she say?”

Natalie breathed carefully.

“She said Phase Three begins only if the Bennett family loses control.”

Ryan’s face tightened.

“What happens then?”

“She called it inheritance protocol.”

Michael stood.

“Our family isn’t Bennett.”

Natalie responded.

“Not Ryan’s family.”

“Lisa’s.”

Lisa frowned.

“My last name was Hale before I married.”

Natalie paused.

“I know.”

“Rebecca always called you Bennett.”

“Even before you met Ryan.”

Lisa stared at her husband.

Ryan whispered.

“Oh God.”

Cole looked between them.

“What?”

Ryan stood slowly.

“The marriage wasn’t designed only to access Lisa.”

“It changed her legal name.”

Michael frowned.

“Why does that matter?”

Ryan looked at Lisa.

“Your father’s Gray Lantern code used family names as authorization structures.”

“When you became Bennett, the system could classify you as Evelyn’s direct family.”

Lisa’s skin went cold.

“So marriage made me part of her authentication chain.”

“Yes.”

Michael understood next.

“That means Evelyn can use Lisa’s identity to claim ownership of Thomas Hale’s system.”

Cole cursed quietly.

Lisa remembered the gala invitation.

“She doesn’t want me as a guest.”

Ryan nodded.

“She needs you physically present.”

“Biometrics.”

“Yes.”

Michael paced toward the window.

“Then we keep Lisa away.”

Lisa shook her head.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

“If Evelyn needs me, she won’t stop.”

“She’ll hurt people until I appear.”

Cole said.

“You are not walking into that gala unprotected.”

“I didn’t say unprotected.”

Lisa looked at Michael.

“Dad designed Gray Lantern.”

“You understand part of it.”

Michael nodded slowly.

Lisa turned toward Ryan.

“You understand Evelyn.”

Ryan said nothing.

Then she looked at Cole.

“And you can arrest whoever is involved.”

Cole crossed his arms.

“What are you proposing?”

Lisa’s expression hardened.

“We give Evelyn exactly what she thinks she wants.”

Ryan stared at her.

“Lisa.”

“She wants her obedient daughter-in-law?”

Lisa picked up the gala invitation.

“Tonight she gets one.”

“But she’s going to discover something first.”

“What?”

May you like

Lisa looked at the bruise left by the ceremonial baton.

“She should have hit me harder.”
