Chapter 17 - The First Betrayal.

Lisa stared at her mother.

Margaret closed the door behind her.

Cole’s team could no longer see inside.

Ryan moved slightly toward Lisa.

Margaret aimed the gun at him.

“Don’t.”

Lisa’s voice trembled.

“Tell me this isn’t true.”

Margaret looked exhausted.

“Your father was going to expose everything.”

“So you killed him?”

“I stopped him.”

“That is not an answer.”

Margaret swallowed.

“Yes.”

The word landed like a physical blow.

Lisa looked toward Evelyn.

For years Evelyn had been the villain.

Cruel.

Manipulative.

Violent.

But evil had never been confined to one person.

Margaret continued.

“Thomas was going to release the entire ledger.”

“Thousands of undercover people would have died.”

“So you murdered your husband.”

“I begged him to find another way.”

Michael’s voice suddenly came through Lisa’s earpiece.

He had remained outside with Cole.

Lisa touched the earpiece.

Margaret noticed.

“Remove it.”

Lisa obeyed.

Margaret dropped it to the floor and crushed it beneath her shoe.

Ryan spoke.

“Why are you here?”

Margaret looked at him.

“Orchard.”

“You gave me control.”

“Yes.”

Ryan stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because your biometric authorization became part of Lisa’s marriage structure.”

“You were a back door.”

Lisa closed her eyes.

Even the contingency had depended upon her marriage.

Margaret looked at Lisa.

“I never wanted you to marry him.”

“Yet you approved his authority.”

“I needed insurance.”

Lisa laughed bitterly.

“Everyone needed something from me.”

“No.”

Margaret’s eyes filled.

“I needed you alive.”

“You imprisoned Michael.”

“To keep Rebecca from killing him.”

“You let me mourn you.”

“To draw Rebecca away from the real ledger.”

“You killed Dad.”

“To protect the people his disclosure would have exposed.”

Every betrayal arrived wrapped in protection.

Lisa was tired of the word.

Evelyn slowly moved toward the baton.

Margaret saw her.

“Don’t.”

Evelyn stopped.

“You always were self-righteous, Margaret.”

“And you always enjoyed power too much.”

Margaret pointed the gun toward the metal box.

“Give me the baton.”

Lisa frowned.

“You already have Orchard.”

“Not without the microfilm.”

Evelyn smiled.

“So that’s why you came.”

Margaret’s expression hardened.

“The original account mapping is inside it.”

“If I combine it with Orchard, I can recover the remaining six hundred million.”

Lisa stepped between them.

“No.”

Margaret stared at her.

“Move.”

“No.”

“Lisa.”

“You don’t get to order me anymore.”

“I am your mother.”

“That stopped meaning automatic trust today.”

Margaret’s face broke for a second.

Lisa continued.

“You murdered Dad.”

“You allowed Michael to disappear.”

“You let another woman live as you.”

“And you’re still talking about protecting us.”

Margaret raised the gun slightly.

Ryan moved.

Margaret fired.

The bullet struck the concrete wall beside him.

Outside, Cole’s team heard it.

Someone began forcing the door.

Evelyn grabbed the ceremonial baton.

Margaret swung toward her.

Evelyn threw it across the room.

Lisa caught it instinctively.

Margaret shouted.

“Give it to me.”

Lisa looked at the baton that had started everything.

Six thousand dollars every month.

Years of lies.

One violent strike.

One hidden ledger.

Lisa gripped it in both hands.

Then smashed it against the steel edge of the safe.

The baton cracked.

A tiny microfilm capsule dropped onto the floor.

Everyone moved.

Lisa stepped on it.

The capsule shattered beneath her heel.

Margaret screamed.

“What have you done?”

Lisa looked at her.

“Ended the inheritance.”

The safe-room door burst open.

Cole entered with agents.

Margaret dropped the gun.

For the first time, both Evelyn and Margaret were in custody.

Two mothers.

Two architects of the same disaster.

Lisa thought it was finally over.

Then Michael appeared at the stairs.

His face was pale.

“Lisa.”

“What?”

He held up his phone.

“Destroying the microfilm triggered another archive.”

Lisa closed her eyes.

“Of course it did.”

Michael showed her the screen.

A final Gray Lantern file had opened.

PROJECT LISA.
