Chapter 11 - The Gala.

The Grand Meridian Hotel had been transformed into a monument to military prestige.

Flags lined the ballroom entrance.

Retired generals stood beside defense executives.

Politicians shook hands beneath gold chandeliers.

Photographers crowded the carpet.

Nobody knew half the building was already under federal surveillance.

Lisa entered at 7:04 p.m.

She wore a dark navy evening gown with long sleeves covering the bruise.

Ryan walked beside her in a tuxedo.

To every camera, they looked like a wealthy married couple arriving together.

Only Lisa knew the microphone hidden beneath her necklace was transmitting every word to Cole.

Ryan leaned close.

“You can still leave.”

Lisa smiled toward photographers.

“You had twelve years to offer me that option.”

His face tightened.

Inside, Evelyn stood near the ballroom stage.

She wore her old dress uniform.

Medals gleamed beneath the lights.

The ceremonial baton rested beneath one arm.

The real one.

Lisa knew because Michael had identified three tiny scratches near the engraved symbol.

Evelyn smiled when Lisa approached.

“My daughter.”

Lisa returned the smile.

“Colonel.”

Evelyn’s eyes moved toward Ryan.

“You look terrible.”

Ryan answered.

“It’s been a long day.”

Evelyn touched his cheek.

Then quietly whispered.

“You disappoint me.”

Lisa’s microphone captured it.

Evelyn guided them toward a private reception room.

Rebecca Voss stood inside.

She looked exactly like the woman from Lisa’s security camera.

Alive.

Calm.

Elegant.

For twenty years the military had considered her dead.

Rebecca extended a hand.

“Lisa.”

Lisa did not take it.

“You wore my mother’s life.”

Rebecca’s expression barely changed.

“Necessary work requires unpleasant disguises.”

“You let me bury you.”

“That was useful.”

Ryan stepped forward.

“Enough.”

Rebecca looked amused.

“You still think you’re important.”

Evelyn closed the door.

“Ryan has served his purpose.”

Lisa glanced between the two older women.

“You’re working together again.”

Rebecca smiled.

“We never stopped.”

Ryan stared at Evelyn.

“You tied me to a chair.”

“To make Lisa believe there was conflict.”

Evelyn shrugged.

“You bruise easily.”

Ryan’s face hardened.

Lisa almost admired the cruelty of it.

Every apparent fracture had been staged.

Except perhaps one.

Lisa.

Evelyn placed the baton on the table.

“You have something we need.”

Lisa looked at it.

“So do you.”

Rebecca approached.

“The master ledger cannot remain fragmented.”

Lisa folded her arms.

“What happens after I unlock it?”

“We restore Gray Lantern.”

“To protect witnesses?”

Rebecca smiled.

“That was Thomas’s sentimental language.”

“What do you call it?”

“Leverage.”

Lisa understood.

Secrets.

Hidden identities.

Money.

Political influence.

A private empire built from people officially dead.

Evelyn opened a laptop.

A scanner illuminated.

“Place your hand here.”

Lisa did not move.

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

“You’ve already made this difficult.”

“You hit me because I wouldn’t pay for this circus.”

“I hit you because disobedience spreads.”

Lisa felt anger burn behind her calm expression.

“You really believe I belong to you.”

Evelyn smiled.

“My son married you.”

“Your money supported our work.”

“Your name completed the family chain.”

“You became mine years ago.”

Lisa placed her palm on the scanner.

Ryan looked shocked.

“Lisa.”

She ignored him.

The system activated.

BIOMETRIC MATCH.

PRIMARY HEIR VERIFIED.

Evelyn smiled triumphantly.

Then the screen changed.

SECOND AUTHENTICATOR REQUIRED.

Michael.

Rebecca turned toward the door.

“He’s here.”

Lisa kept her face still.

That had not been part of the plan.

Cole’s voice whispered through Lisa’s earpiece.

We lost Michael ten minutes ago.

Lisa’s heart dropped.

The private door opened.

Michael entered.

But he was not alone.

May you like

Margaret stood beside him.

And Rebecca’s pistol was pressed against Margaret’s back.
