Chapter 16 - Evelyn's Last Command.

Evelyn had not escaped alone.

Two members of the transport detail were missing.

One agent had been found unconscious.

The other had worked security at Hollow Ridge years earlier.

Lisa stared at the transaction map.

Money was scattering across the world.

“Stop it.”

Michael typed rapidly.

“I’m trying.”

Ryan leaned over another terminal.

“Route through dead-account verification.”

Michael glanced at him.

“What?”

“Gray Lantern requires death-status confirmation before accepting high-value transfers.”

“If we force reverification, half the destination accounts freeze.”

Michael stared.

“That could work.”

They activated the protocol.

Hundreds of transfers turned red.

BLOCKED.

Others continued.

Lisa watched the remaining total.

2.8 billion became 1.6.

Then 940 million.

Then 612 million.

Michael hit another command.

TRANSFER HALTED.

The room exhaled.

Lisa looked at Ryan.

“You just saved more than two billion dollars.”

Ryan said quietly.

“It was never mine.”

Her phone rang.

Unknown number.

Lisa answered.

Evelyn.

“You always were clever.”

Lisa’s expression hardened.

“Where are you?”

“You know where.”

Lisa did.

The first house.

Denver.

The garage.

The evidence against her father’s killers.

Evelyn continued.

“Bring Ryan.”

“No.”

“You want Thomas’s recording?”

Lisa felt Michael listening.

“I already know you killed him.”

“No.”

“You know what Margaret told you.”

“That is very different.”

Lisa looked at Michael.

Evelyn lowered her voice.

“Your mother has always been better at lying than I am.”

“You want me to believe you?”

“I want you to watch the recording.”

“Then you can decide which parent destroyed your family.”

The call ended.

Cole immediately began tracing it.

Lisa grabbed her coat.

“You are not going there alone,” Cole said.

“I know.”

Ryan stepped forward.

“She asked for me.”

Lisa looked at him.

“You’re not required to come.”

Ryan almost smiled.

“I think I’ve passed the point where requirements matter.”

They flew to Denver aboard a government aircraft.

By nightfall they reached the old brick house.

Lisa had not visited in years.

The porch still had the mark where Ryan once dropped a grill.

The garage door opened remotely.

Evelyn stood inside.

No weapon visible.

The real ceremonial baton rested on a workbench.

Lisa entered with Ryan.

Cole’s team remained outside.

Evelyn smiled at the house.

“You two were happy here.”

Lisa answered.

“Were we?”

Ryan said nothing.

Evelyn pointed toward the concrete floor.

“Lift the third panel.”

Ryan found the hidden latch.

Beneath the garage was a narrow safe room.

Inside sat a metal box.

Lisa opened it.

A digital recorder rested inside.

Along with photographs of Thomas Hale.

Her father.

One photograph showed him arguing with Evelyn.

Another showed Margaret.

Another showed Rebecca.

All four had worked together.

Lisa pressed play.

Her father’s voice filled the room.

If you are hearing this, Gray Lantern has already broken us.

Lisa closed her eyes.

Thomas continued.

Evelyn did not begin the corruption.

Neither did Rebecca.

I did.

Ryan looked at Lisa.

She remained frozen.

Thomas’s recording continued.

I built the financial masking tools that allowed undocumented operations to survive congressional scrutiny.

I believed secrecy protected good people.

Then the wrong people discovered how profitable invisibility could be.

I tried to destroy the system.

Margaret stopped me.

Lisa opened her eyes.

Michael whispered.

“Mom.”

Thomas continued.

Margaret believed Gray Lantern could be redirected.

She created Orchard.

But Orchard required money.

So she allowed illegal operations to continue while diverting a portion into her containment fund.

Evelyn discovered it.

Rebecca exploited it.

And Michael learned too much.

Lisa felt sick.

Her mother had not merely been a victim.

She had helped Gray Lantern survive.

The recording continued.

If Michael disappears, assume Margaret made the choice.

A long silence followed.

Then Thomas spoke his final words.

Lisa, never let our sins become your inheritance.

The recording ended.

Lisa stared at Evelyn.

“You didn’t kill him?”

Evelyn looked almost sad.

“No.”

“Then who did?”

A voice came from behind them.

“I did.”

Lisa turned.

May you like

Margaret stood at the top of the safe-room stairs.

A gun in her hand.
