Chapter 12 - The Choice.

Lisa’s mother looked terrified.
Michael looked furious.
Rebecca closed the door behind them.
Evelyn smiled.
“Family reunion.”
Lisa stared at Michael.
“What happened?”
“They took Mom from the secure vehicle.”
Cole’s voice whispered through Lisa’s earpiece.
We have teams outside.
Do not make sudden moves.
Rebecca gestured toward Michael.
“Authenticate.”
“No.”
Rebecca pushed the gun harder against Margaret.
Lisa saw her mother wince.
Michael stepped toward the scanner.
Lisa stopped him.
“Wait.”
Rebecca’s eyes narrowed.
Lisa looked at Evelyn.
“You have my mother.”
“You have Michael.”
“You have me.”
“What exactly are you afraid of?”
Evelyn smiled.
“You.”
The answer surprised everyone.
Evelyn continued.
“Your father was brilliant.”
“But he made one mistake.”
“He believed morality could be engineered.”
Lisa glanced at the screen.
“What did he build into the system?”
“A judgment layer.”
Michael understood.
“The emergency succession test.”
Evelyn looked at him with irritation.
“You remember more than I expected.”
Lisa asked.
“What test?”
Michael spoke carefully.
“If both heirs authenticate, the system evaluates the ledger state.”
“If corruption exceeds a threshold, ownership does not transfer.”
“What happens?”
Michael looked at Evelyn.
“It exposes everything.”
Silence fell.
Lisa finally understood why Evelyn had spent years manipulating her instead of simply forcing access.
She needed Lisa’s voluntary authorization.
“How does it know whether authentication is voluntary?”
Michael pointed at the scanner.
“Stress markers.”
“Pulse.”
“Pressure.”
“Eye movement.”
“Dad designed interrogation-resistant biometrics.”
Evelyn’s smile vanished.
Lisa almost laughed.
“That’s why the monthly money mattered.”
Evelyn said nothing.
“You needed me conditioned to obey you willingly.”
Ryan stared at his mother.
“You told me it was about loyalty.”
“It was.”
“To you.”
Evelyn turned toward him.
“You were useful because Lisa loved you.”
The words hit Ryan harder than any baton.
Rebecca grew impatient.
“We don’t need perfect compliance.”
“We need a valid signature.”
Michael shook his head.
“Not if Thomas finished the protocol.”
Rebecca raised the gun.
“Then we test that theory.”
Margaret suddenly spoke.
“Thomas did finish it.”
Everyone looked at her.
She smiled faintly.
“And he added one more thing.”
Evelyn’s face tightened.
“What?”
Margaret looked at Lisa.
“Truth.”
Lisa frowned.
Margaret continued.
“The system records every person in the room during final authentication.”
“Voice.”
“Face.”
“Identity.”
Rebecca went pale.
Michael looked at the ceiling camera.
“If the sequence is active, it has already identified all of us.”
Evelyn moved toward the laptop.
Lisa slammed the lid shut.
Evelyn grabbed the baton.
For a horrifying second, Lisa thought she would strike again.
Ryan stepped between them.
“No.”
Evelyn stared at her son.
“Move.”
“No.”
Her expression hardened.
“You would choose her after everything I gave you?”
Ryan looked back at Lisa.
Then at his mother.
“You didn’t give me a life.”
“You gave me an assignment.”
Evelyn raised the baton.
Ryan caught it.
They struggled.
Rebecca swung her pistol toward him.
Michael lunged.
The gun fired.
The ballroom music outside stopped.
Margaret screamed.
Ryan fell against the table.
Lisa stared at him.
Blood appeared across the side of his jacket.
Cole’s voice exploded through her earpiece.
Move now!
The private doors burst open.
Federal agents flooded the room.
Rebecca grabbed Lisa around the throat and pulled her backward.
The pistol pressed against Lisa’s ribs.
“Everyone stops.”
Cole froze.
Rebecca smiled against Lisa’s ear.
“You’re coming with me.”
Lisa looked at the scanner.
The biometric sequence was still active.
Michael saw it too.
Lisa understood what he wanted.
She slowly raised her hand.
Then pressed her palm against the scanner one final time.
Rebecca hissed.
“What are you doing?”
Lisa looked at Evelyn.
“Finishing what my father started.”
Michael slammed his hand onto the second reader.
The screen turned white.
Then thousands of files began uploading.
Evelyn screamed.
“No!”
Across the ballroom, every presentation screen suddenly changed.
Guests turned toward them.
Names appeared.
Accounts.
Photographs.
Payments.

Gray Lantern was exposing itself in real time.
And Evelyn Bennett’s name appeared at the very top.
