Chapter 15 - Mother's Secret.

Lisa’s hand tightened around the phone.

“Sacrificed Michael?”

Michael looked at her sharply.

Margaret continued.

“I chose the wrong words.”

“No.”

“You chose the honest ones.”

Lisa put the call on speaker.

“Tell him.”

Silence.

Michael approached.

“Mom?”

Margaret’s breathing changed.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For letting you disappear.”

Michael stared at the phone.

Lisa felt rage building.

“You knew?”

“I knew Rebecca wanted him.”

“And you let her take him?”

“I believed it was the only way to protect both of you.”

Michael stepped backward.

“You gave me to them.”

“No.”

“You knew where I was?”

“For the first year.”

Michael laughed bitterly.

“Nine years, Mom.”

“I lost contact.”

“You didn’t lose contact.”

“You stopped looking.”

Margaret began crying.

Lisa felt none of the comfort she once associated with that sound.

The countdown reached ninety seconds.

Lisa opened the transfer controls.

“Mom.”

“What is Orchard?”

Margaret answered.

“A containment fund.”

“Your father created it after discovering Gray Lantern had become corrupted.”

“He moved compromised assets into a structure that could eventually return money to victims.”

“Why in your name?”

“Because I was never military.”

“I existed outside their hierarchy.”

Michael stared at the screen.

“The ownership record predates Dad’s death.”

“Yes.”

Lisa asked.

“Then why didn’t you tell us?”

“Because Evelyn and Rebecca would have killed you.”

Lisa looked toward Ryan.

That logic had been used too many times by too many people.

“Everyone keeps saying they lied to protect me.”

Margaret whispered.

“I did.”

“And every lie gave Gray Lantern more power.”

The timer reached forty seconds.

Michael examined the code.

“If Lisa allows the transfer, Orchard takes ownership of all seized assets.”

“If she blocks it, assets scatter through the contingency accounts.”

Cole asked.

“Can they be recovered later?”

“Maybe.”

“How much?”

Michael looked at the total.

“2.8 billion.”

Everyone went silent.

Margaret spoke through the phone.

“Lisa.”

“Do not stop it.”

“Your father designed Orchard to receive that money.”

Lisa stared at the authorization button.

Ryan stepped beside her.

“You don’t know who controls Orchard now.”

Margaret snapped.

“I do.”

Lisa looked at the registration.

“You’ve been officially dead in half the databases Rebecca manipulated.”

“I can fix that.”

“Later.”

“Lisa, listen to me.”

Ten seconds.

Natalie whispered.

“Your choice.”

Lisa remembered her father’s letter.

Never mistake secrecy for security.

Five seconds.

Lisa pressed AUTHORIZE.

The transfer completed.

2.8 billion dollars moved into Orchard Strategic Holdings.

Margaret exhaled.

“Thank God.”

Then Michael noticed something.

“Wait.”

He opened the secondary authority panel.

His face changed.

“What?”

“Margaret isn’t the only controller.”

Lisa leaned closer.

A second beneficial authority had been added seven years earlier.

Someone with power to transfer every dollar from Orchard without Lisa’s approval.

The name appeared.

RYAN BENNETT.

Lisa slowly turned toward her husband.

Ryan stared at the screen in shock.

“I didn’t know.”

Lisa almost laughed.

“That excuse is getting old.”

Ryan stepped closer.

“I swear.”

Michael checked the digital signature.

“It’s authentic.”

Ryan looked horrified.

“Then Rebecca added it.”

Natalie shook her head.

“She couldn’t.”

“Why?”

“Because Orchard requires original-family authorization.”

Everyone looked toward the phone.

Margaret had gone completely silent.

Lisa spoke slowly.

“Mom.”

No answer.

“Who gave Ryan control?”

The call disconnected.

Michael stared at Lisa.

Then another notification appeared.

ORCHARD TRANSFER INITIATED.

2.8 billion dollars were already moving again.

Authorized by Ryan Bennett.

Ryan reached for the computer.

“That isn’t me.”

Lisa checked the destination.

The funds were being routed to hundreds of accounts.

Michael’s face turned pale.

“They’re emptying everything.”

Cole asked.

“Who can impersonate Ryan’s authorization?”

Michael looked at Lisa.

“Someone with his biometric template.”

Lisa immediately understood.

Evelyn.

Ryan’s mother.

But Evelyn was in federal custody.

Cole’s radio sounded.

His expression changed.

May you like

Then he looked at Ryan.

“Evelyn Bennett escaped transport eleven minutes ago.”
