Chapter 19 - The Man Who Started It.

Thomas Hale did not run.
When federal agents entered the Washington office, he was sitting behind his desk.
Lisa arrived an hour later.
Her father stood when she entered.
He looked older than the man in her memories.
But not unfamiliar.
“Lisa.”
She remained near the door.
“Don’t call me that like you saw me yesterday.”
Thomas lowered his eyes.
“You have every right to hate me.”
“I don’t even know you.”
“That may be safer.”
Lisa laughed.
“There it is again.”
“Protection.”
“Safety.”
“Sacrifice.”
“You all use noble words every time you destroy somebody.”
Thomas absorbed the accusation.
Michael entered behind her.
Their father looked at him.
“Son.”
Michael shook his head.
“No.”
Thomas sat down slowly.
Cole placed the Project Lisa file on the desk.
“Explain the signature.”
Thomas looked at it.
“I authorized final transfer.”
“Why?”
“Because Gray Lantern could not continue.”
Lisa stared at him.
“You spent twenty years inside oversight.”
“Trying to dismantle it without exposing active personnel.”
“That is exactly what Mom said.”
Thomas’s expression hardened.
“Margaret wanted the money.”
“She convinced herself it was restitution.”
“She became what she claimed to fight.”
“And you?”
Thomas looked toward the window.
“I became a coward.”
The admission silenced Lisa.
He continued.
“I should have exposed everything decades ago.”
“I was afraid of the casualties.”
“So I built secrets around secrets.”
“Each solution created another layer.”
“Rebecca became addicted to leverage.”
“Evelyn became addicted to command.”
“Margaret became addicted to control.”
“And I became addicted to believing one final patch could fix the system.”
Lisa looked at him.
“What about Ryan?”
Thomas glanced toward the door.
Ryan stood outside under guard.
“He was recruited because he was psychologically compatible with you.”
Lisa’s jaw tightened.
“I know.”
“No.”
“You know what Rebecca wrote.”
“You don’t know why I allowed it.”
Lisa stared at him.
“You approved my marriage?”
“I approved continued observation.”
“Not marriage.”
“Evelyn accelerated the operation.”
“Did you know?”
“Before the wedding.”
Lisa’s face hardened.
“And you did nothing.”
Thomas lowered his head.
“I believed Ryan had turned against them.”
Ryan entered.
“I had.”
Lisa looked between them.
“You knew my father was alive?”
Ryan shook his head.
“Not until three years ago.”
Lisa almost laughed from disbelief.
“Another secret.”
Ryan continued.
“Thomas contacted me.”
“He offered proof about Michael if I helped sabotage Evelyn’s financial channels.”
Lisa looked at her father.
“So Ryan stole from my company for you.”
Thomas nodded.
“The funds were used to locate Michael and finance extraction attempts.”
Lisa turned toward Ryan.
“Why didn’t you tell me after you found Dad?”
“Because he said Gray Lantern would kill you.”
Lisa closed her eyes.
“Of course he did.”
Thomas opened a drawer slowly.
Cole watched him carefully.
He removed a small hardware device.
The original key.
He placed it on the desk.
“This ends tonight.”
Lisa looked at him.
“How?”
“Gray Lantern’s final root system exists on three mirrored servers.”
“One belongs to the government.”
“One belongs to Orchard.”
“And the last belongs to Sentinel Meridian.”
Lisa understood.
“You embedded it in my company.”
“I did.”
“That’s why Rebecca wanted Sentinel.”
“Yes.”
Thomas looked ashamed.
“I built part of your success without your knowledge.”
Lisa’s anger sharpened.
“What does that mean?”
“Some of Sentinel Meridian’s earliest government contracts were steered toward you.”
Lisa stared at him.
Her company.
Her achievement.
Even that had been touched by their manipulation.
Thomas stood.
“But what you built afterward was yours.”
“You don’t get to tell me which parts count.”
“No.”
“I don’t.”
Michael asked.
“How do we delete the root?”
Thomas looked at both children.
“All three authenticated heirs must agree.”
“Three?”
Lisa asked.
“Michael.”
“You.”
“And me.”
They moved toward the isolated terminal.
Thomas inserted the key.
Michael authenticated.
Lisa placed her hand on the scanner.
A final message appeared.
PERMANENT DESTRUCTION OF GRAY LANTERN ROOT WILL ERASE ALL UNRECOVERED IDENTITY PROTECTION RECORDS.
Michael looked at his father.
“There may still be people depending on those identities.”
Thomas nodded.
Lisa stared at the screen.
Destroying Gray Lantern could expose innocent people.
Preserving it could allow another Evelyn or Rebecca to rebuild everything.
Ryan stood behind her.
“It has to be your decision.”
Lisa looked back at him.
“Not yours?”
“No.”
“Not Dad’s?”
Thomas answered.
“No.”
For the first time in her life, nobody was telling Lisa what sacrifice required.
She turned back to the terminal.
Then pressed the final authorization.
DESTROY ROOT?
YES.
The screen went black.
Gray Lantern disappeared.
Thomas exhaled.
Michael closed his eyes.
Lisa felt nothing at first.
Then an alarm sounded.
Cole checked his phone.
His face changed.
“What happened?”
Thomas looked toward the terminal.
Cole answered.
“Someone copied the root before deletion.”
Lisa’s blood went cold.
“When?”
“Seven minutes ago.”
“Who?”
Cole turned the phone toward them.
May you like
The copy had been authorized through an executive account at Sentinel Meridian.
NATALIE HARPER.
