Chapter 7 - The False Fort.

Fort Danner had closed fifteen years earlier.

That was precisely why the message bothered Cole.

“No active unit.”

“No permanent Military Police.”

“No reason for Evelyn to choose it.”

Michael examined the photograph frame by frame.

Lisa watched him isolate reflections in a metal cabinet behind Ryan.

A distorted sign appeared.

Michael rotated the image.

Cole leaned closer.

“That isn’t Fort Danner.”

Lisa read the letters.

HOLLOW RIDGE VETERANS CENTER.

She knew the name.

Evelyn’s charity gala had been raising money for it.

Or claiming to.

Cole immediately dispatched a tactical unit.

Hollow Ridge sat forty miles outside the city.

During the drive, Lisa received no new messages.

Her thoughts kept returning to Ryan.

She hated him.

Or wanted to.

But emotions were never that simple.

There had been mornings when he brought her coffee without being asked.

Nights when he stayed awake beside her after nightmares about Michael.

A week when her mother was dying and Ryan slept in a hospital chair because Lisa refused to leave the room.

Had those moments been rehearsed too?

Michael seemed to read her thoughts.

“You can hate what he did without pretending every second was fake.”

Lisa looked at him.

“That supposed to make me feel better?”

“No.”

“It’s supposed to keep you focused.”

They reached Hollow Ridge shortly before ten.

The veterans center appeared abandoned.

Windows were boarded.

Paint peeled from the front doors.

Yet the security cameras were new.

Cole’s unit entered through three access points.

Lisa and Michael remained in an armored vehicle until the building was cleared.

Ten minutes later, Cole returned.

“You need to see this.”

The basement smelled like bleach and old concrete.

They passed through a steel door disguised as a utility closet.

Beyond it was a fully functioning operations room.

Servers.

Financial terminals.

Military personnel files.

Hundreds of photographs.

Lisa stared at one wall.

Faces were arranged beneath categories.

ACTIVE.

COMPROMISED.

DECEASED.

REASSIGNED.

Michael found his own photograph beneath COMPROMISED.

Lisa found hers beneath ASSET.

Ryan’s photograph was beneath HANDLER.

Evelyn’s photograph appeared under COMMAND.

And Rebecca Voss appeared beneath a word that unsettled Lisa more than any other.

FOUNDER.

Cole opened a filing cabinet.

Inside were bank documents tracing Lisa’s monthly payments.

Six thousand dollars from Lisa entered one nonprofit.

Within forty-eight hours it became dozens of smaller deposits.

Medical reimbursements.

Survivor benefits.

Housing stipends.

Consulting payments.

Payments to identities that should not exist.

Lisa turned toward Michael.

“Where did the money finally go?”

He pointed toward another terminal.

“To support people inside the network.”

“Some of them are legitimate witnesses.”

“Others are criminals.”

“Gray Lantern became a private invisible society.”

Cole examined a ledger.

“And Lisa was financing it without knowing.”

A noise came from the corridor.

Weapons rose.

A man stumbled into view.

Ryan.

His hands were bound.

His face was bruised.

Lisa did not move toward him.

Cole cut him free.

“Where’s Evelyn?”

Ryan breathed heavily.

“She escaped.”

“Rebecca?”

“Alive.”

“We know that.”

Ryan looked at Lisa.

“No.”

“You don’t understand.”

“She’s not just alive.”

Ryan glanced toward Michael.

“She’s been living under your mother’s name.”

Lisa stopped.

“My mother died three years ago.”

Ryan shook his head.

“The woman you buried was Rebecca.”

Silence filled the room.

Lisa stared at him.

“That’s impossible.”

Michael looked even more shocked.

Ryan continued.

“DNA records were manipulated.”

“Hospital records were swapped.”

“The real Rebecca Voss assumed your mother’s identity years before she died.”

Lisa’s voice came out barely above a whisper.

“Then where was my mother?”

Ryan looked toward one of the steel doors.

“Evelyn kept her alive.”

Lisa’s heart slammed against her ribs.

“For what?”

Ryan looked at Michael.

“Because your mother knew where your father hid the original Gray Lantern ledger.”

Cole opened the steel door.

A narrow passage stretched into darkness.

At the far end, something moved.

A woman’s voice whispered from somewhere beyond the lights.

“Lisa?”

Lisa stopped breathing.

She knew that voice.

May you like

She had heard it every day of her childhood.

“Mom?”
