Chapter 9 - The Husband's Bargain.

Ryan sat alone inside the operations room when Lisa entered.
Cole remained outside.
Lisa closed the door.
Ryan looked exhausted.
“You found your mother.”
“Yes.”
“I’m glad.”
“Don’t.”
He lowered his eyes.
Lisa sat across from him.
“My father.”
Ryan became still.
“What about him?”
“My mother says Evelyn killed him.”
Ryan said nothing.
Lisa leaned forward.
“She says you know where the evidence is.”
Ryan rubbed his face.
“I know where Evelyn said it was.”
“Where?”
“You’ll hate me more.”
“That seems difficult.”
Ryan looked at her.
“The first house we bought.”
Lisa stopped breathing.
Their starter home.
The small brick house outside Denver.
Ryan had insisted they keep it after moving.
He claimed he was sentimental.
“What’s there?”
“A safe beneath the garage.”
“What’s inside?”
“Original operational reports.”
“Financial records.”
“Maybe your father’s final recording.”
Lisa stood.
“You knew this the entire time.”
“Not when we met.”
“When?”
“A year after we married.”
“And you said nothing.”
Ryan’s eyes hardened defensively.
“You think there was a clean way out?”
“Yes.”
“Tell your wife the truth.”
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“Then Evelyn would have killed Michael.”
Lisa froze.
“You knew Michael was alive.”
“I found out two years after our wedding.”
“You let me mourn him.”
“I kept him alive.”
“By keeping me ignorant?”
“By making Evelyn believe I was loyal.”
Lisa wanted to believe none of it.
But Ryan’s fear looked real.
That did not erase what he had done.
“How much of our marriage was an assignment?”
“At the beginning?”
“All of it.”
The answer hurt more than Lisa expected.
“And later?”
Ryan stared at the table.
“I fell in love with you.”
Lisa said nothing.
Ryan continued.
“That wasn’t supposed to happen.”
“Evelyn told me you were arrogant.”
“Emotionally isolated.”
“Easy to manipulate through family obligations.”
“That’s why she demanded the monthly payments.”
“She wanted proof I could control you.”
Lisa laughed once.
“And I paid.”
“For years.”
Ryan nodded.
“Every transfer increased my standing inside Gray Lantern.”
“So my money was buying your promotion.”
“Yes.”
Lisa stood.
“Then you stole almost four hundred thousand dollars from Sentinel Meridian.”
Ryan looked ashamed.
“I redirected it.”
“That is stealing.”
“I needed funds Evelyn couldn’t trace.”
“For what?”
Ryan looked through the glass toward Michael.
“To find him.”
Lisa hesitated.
“You used my company’s money to locate my brother?”
“Yes.”
“Then why was it routed into dead accounts?”
“Because Gray Lantern was the only network capable of moving money without Evelyn noticing.”
Lisa stared at him.
The betrayal remained.
But its shape was becoming more complicated.
“What does Evelyn want at the gala?”
Ryan answered immediately.
“Immunity.”
“How?”
“She has records connecting senior officials and private contractors to Gray Lantern.”
“She plans to trade the ledger for protection.”
Cole entered.
“And if they refuse?”
Ryan looked at him.
“She releases the active identities.”
Cole’s expression darkened.
“That could get people killed.”
“Thousands.”
Lisa’s phone buzzed.
A calendar invitation appeared.
Sent from Evelyn.
MILITARY HERITAGE CHARITY GALA.
7:00 p.m.
One guest.
Lisa Bennett.
Below it was a private note.
Wear something appropriate.
Tonight you finally learn what your family was worth.
Lisa showed Ryan.
He went pale.
“She knows we found Margaret.”
Cole asked.
“How?”
Ryan looked around at the hidden facility.
“Because there’s still someone inside Sentinel Meridian working for her.”
Lisa thought of Natalie.
But Natalie had been shot.
Then another possibility surfaced.
Her chief security officer.
Her board.
Her executive team.
Anyone.
Ryan leaned toward her.
“Lisa.”
“There’s one person Evelyn has never betrayed.”
“Who?”
Ryan’s answer surprised her.
“Rebecca.”
Michael entered from the hallway.
“No.”
He held up a recovered communication log.
“You’re wrong.”
Everyone looked at him.
Michael placed the document on the table.
Rebecca had sent an encrypted message forty minutes earlier.
The recipient was not Evelyn.
It was Ryan.
Lisa stared at her husband.
Ryan’s face went blank.
Michael read the message aloud.
Phase Three remains active.
