The gala ballroom erupted.
Hundreds of guests stared at the giant screens.
Classified account numbers scrolled beside military identities.
Charity payments appeared beside shell corporations.
Photographs connected retired officers to secret financial transfers.
Some guests reached for phones.
Others tried leaving.
Federal agents locked the exits.
Lisa remained frozen inside Rebecca’s grip.
Rebecca pressed the pistol closer.
“Shut it down.”
“I can’t.”
“You built the network architecture.”
“My father built this.”
“You built the systems carrying the release.”
Lisa almost smiled.
“Then I guess you should have chosen another daughter-in-law.”
Rebecca dragged her toward a service door.
Cole followed from several yards away.
“Rebecca.”
“Put the weapon down.”
She laughed.
“You people declared me dead twenty-three years ago.”
“You don’t get to arrest a ghost.”
Cole answered calmly.
“Watch me.”
A voice suddenly came from behind Rebecca.
“Drop it.”
Ryan stood unsteadily near the table.
His hand pressed against his bleeding side.
Rebecca turned slightly.
That was enough.
Lisa drove her heel backward into Rebecca’s shin.
Rebecca lost balance.
Cole tackled her.
The pistol slid across the floor.
Michael kicked it away.
Agents restrained Rebecca.
For the first time, the woman who had manipulated Lisa’s family for decades looked frightened.
Evelyn was already in handcuffs.
She watched the ballroom screens with disbelief.
“This can be contained.”
Cole looked at her.
“Not anymore.”
A television camera outside the ballroom had begun filming the data screens.
News crews were arriving.
The gala’s livestream was still running.
Thousands of viewers had captured screenshots.
Evelyn stared at Lisa.
“You destroyed military operations you don’t understand.”
Lisa stepped toward her.
“No.”
“I destroyed your ability to hide behind them.”
Paramedics approached Ryan.
He refused the stretcher until Lisa looked at him.
“Go.”
Ryan held her gaze.
“You don’t owe me forgiveness.”
“That’s the first honest thing you’ve said today.”
He looked away.
Lisa felt no satisfaction.
Only exhaustion.
Cole approached her carrying the baton in an evidence bag.
“We opened it.”
Lisa looked at him.
“The ledger?”
“A microfilm index.”
“Your mother was right.”
“But there was something else inside.”
Cole handed her a sealed envelope.
It was old.
Yellowed.
Her name was written across the front.
Lisa recognized her father’s handwriting immediately.

Her hands shook as she opened it.
Inside was a single handwritten page.
Lisa.
If you are reading this, someone failed to protect you from my mistakes.
Never mistake secrecy for security.
Never mistake obedience for love.
And never let anyone convince you that sacrifice requires surrendering your judgment.
Lisa stopped reading.
Her eyes filled.
Michael stood beside her.
There was another line at the bottom.
Michael will blame himself.
Tell him I never did.
Michael turned away.
Lisa reached for his hand.
For the first time since they reunited, he let himself cry.
Then Cole’s radio sounded.
His expression changed.
“What?”
He listened.
Then looked at Lisa.
“We have a problem.”
She almost laughed.
“Another one?”
“The upload triggered Gray Lantern’s contingency system.”
Michael immediately became alert.
“What contingency?”
Cole turned the tablet toward them.
A countdown appeared.
01:43:17.
Lisa frowned.
“What happens when it reaches zero?”
Michael stared at the code beneath it.
Then went pale.
“It transfers every remaining Gray Lantern asset.”
“To where?”
Michael looked at Lisa.
“Sentinel Meridian.”
Lisa’s stomach dropped.
Cole asked.
“Meaning what?”
Lisa answered.
“Meaning my company is about to become the legal owner of billions of dollars tied to an illegal covert network.”
Michael nodded.
“And whoever controls Sentinel Meridian when the timer ends controls the money.”
Lisa thought of her board.
Then Natalie’s warning returned.
Someone inside the company was still working for Evelyn.
Her phone buzzed.
A board notification appeared.
EMERGENCY CEO REMOVAL VOTE.
Meeting begins in ten minutes.
