Chapter 4 - The Marriage File.

Michael refused medical treatment until Lisa agreed to move him into a secured conference room.

Cole placed guards outside.

Lisa sat across from her brother.

For nine years she had imagined this reunion.

She had pictured tears.

Questions.

Hugs.

Instead, she was studying him like a witness.

“When did Ryan know who I was?”

Michael rubbed his hands together.

“Before your first date.”

Lisa stared at him.

“That isn’t possible.”

“You met him at the Denver technology conference.”

“He bumped into me near registration.”

“That was arranged.”

“No.”

“He knew what panel you were attending.”

Lisa remembered Ryan smiling after spilling coffee across her conference badge.

He had joked that destroying a cybersecurity executive’s identification was a terrible introduction.

She had repeated that story at their wedding.

People had laughed.

Michael continued.

“Gray Lantern tracked you for almost two years.”

“Why?”

“Because Dad hid the master key.”

“In the seal.”

“Yes.”

“Then why not steal it?”

Michael looked toward the conference-room cameras.

“Because the key was useless without you.”

Lisa frowned.

“My fingerprints?”

“More than that.”

Their father had designed the hardware around a physical authentication sequence.

Lisa’s biometric information had been embedded into the system when she was a child.

She stared at Michael.

“He used his daughter as a password?”

“He used both of us.”

Michael pulled up his sleeve.

A faded scar crossed his forearm.

Lisa remembered him getting stitches there when they were teenagers.

He had told her it happened while climbing a fence.

“That scar?”

“They implanted a passive identifier.”

Lisa felt sick.

“Dad did that?”

“He was terrified Gray Lantern would be weaponized.”

“Apparently he was right.”

Michael nodded.

Cole entered carrying a sealed evidence envelope.

He placed a flash drive on the table.

“We recovered this from the Bennett residence.”

Lisa recognized it.

Ryan kept the drive attached to his private laptop.

Cole continued.

“It contains a folder titled ORCHARD.”

Michael stiffened.

“Open it offline.”

They moved to an isolated computer.

The folder required a password.

Lisa tried Ryan’s usual combinations.

Nothing worked.

Then Michael spoke.

“Try the date you met.”

Lisa entered it.

Access granted.

Lisa stared at the screen.

Dozens of documents appeared.

Bank records.

Background reports.

Photographs.

And one folder bearing her name.

LISA BENNETT ACQUISITION PLAN.

Her stomach tightened.

She opened it.

The first document was dated six months before she met Ryan.

It contained photographs of Lisa leaving her office, running near her apartment, meeting clients, visiting her mother.

There were notes about her habits.

Her finances.

Her friendships.

Even her favorite restaurants.

One line had been highlighted.

Subject demonstrates high loyalty response when trust is framed as sacrifice.

Lisa stopped breathing for a moment.

Ryan had once told her Evelyn survived financially only because her husband died with unresolved Army benefits.

Lisa had started sending money the following month.

Six thousand dollars.

Exactly the amount recommended in the report.

Michael pointed toward another file.

“Open recruitment.”

Lisa clicked.

RYAN BENNETT - PRIMARY SOCIAL ACCESS CANDIDATE.

His photograph appeared.

Below it were instructions.

Establish accidental contact.

Develop emotional dependency.

Do not request direct corporate access during first eighteen months.

Encourage financial support for Evelyn Bennett gradually.

Marriage recommended only after trust index exceeds eighty percent.

Lisa pushed her chair back.

Every anniversary.

Every weekend trip.

Every whispered promise.

Had all of it been an operation?

Cole opened another document.

This one contained a signature.

Rebecca Voss.

Operation Director.

Lisa noticed a second approval block.

Evelyn Bennett.

Family Integration Lead.

Then she saw a third name.

She froze.

Natalie Harper.

Her closest friend.

The woman who had been Lisa’s maid of honor.

The woman who had sat beside Lisa at the hospital when her mother died.

The woman who currently served as Sentinel Meridian’s chief strategy officer.

Michael looked at her.

“You know her.”

Lisa could barely speak.

“She has access to everything.”

Cole stood immediately.

“Where is Natalie now?”

Lisa checked the executive location system.

Natalie’s badge had entered the building six minutes earlier.

Twenty floors below them.

Then the screen changed.

EXECUTIVE VAULT ACCESS REQUEST.

Lisa stared at the request.

It had been submitted using her credentials.

May you like

Michael whispered.

“She’s going for the second key.”
