Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Marriage

Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Marriage
The Carver Estate had never felt so silent.
Not even during the most serious business meetings Alexander Carver had ever hosted.
Not even when powerful executives sat across from him, terrified of losing millions of dollars with one wrong decision.
Because tonight, the entire world inside those marble walls had changed.
Everyone had just discovered that Hannah Brooks—the woman they believed was only a pregnant housekeeper—was actually Alexander Carver’s wife.
And nobody knew what to do with that information.
Claire Whitlock stood frozen near the staircase, still holding the silver scissors.
Her confidence was gone.
The woman who had spent the last thirty minutes humiliating Hannah now looked like someone who had just realized she had made the biggest mistake of her life.
“Alexander…” Claire finally whispered.
Her voice trembled.
“You never told anyone you were married.”
Alexander’s expression remained cold.
“That doesn’t give you permission to hurt my wife.”
Claire swallowed.
“But why would you hide her?”
A few guests exchanged curious looks.
It was the question everyone wanted answered.
Why would Alexander Carver, one of the most famous billionaires in America, hide his marriage?
Alexander looked down at Hannah.
For a brief moment, the anger in his eyes softened.
Because the truth was complicated.
Eighteen months earlier, Hannah had not entered his life as a wealthy woman.
She had entered as the only person who could save his daughter.
After his first wife died, Alexander’s five-year-old daughter, Lily, stopped speaking.
Doctors said grief had taken away the little girl’s ability to trust anyone.
Then Hannah arrived.
She was not interested in money.
She did not care about his reputation.
She simply sat beside Lily every night and told her stories until the child finally smiled again.
Alexander had fallen in love slowly.
Not because Hannah impressed him.
But because she never tried to.
When he proposed, Hannah refused at first.
She told him she didn’t want to be known as “the billionaire’s wife.”
She wanted people to love her for who she was.
So they agreed to keep their marriage private.
Until they could announce it on their own terms.
But Claire had destroyed that plan.
Alexander turned back toward the guests.
“My wife chose privacy.”
His voice was firm.
“She never wanted attention or status.”
He looked at Claire.
“She never used my name to gain anything.”
The words cut deeper than an insult.
Because everyone knew Claire was the opposite.
For years, she had built her entire identity around becoming Mrs. Alexander Carver.
She attended every charity event.
Appeared in every magazine.
Made sure everyone knew she belonged beside him.
But tonight, the truth was different.
The woman who never wanted the spotlight had always been the one standing closest to him.
Claire’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re really choosing her?”
Alexander looked confused.
“Choosing?”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“You’re throwing away everything because of someone like her?”
The room went completely quiet.
Hannah lowered her gaze.
She had heard those words before.
Someone like her.
Someone who came from nothing.
Someone who wasn’t born into wealth.
Alexander stepped forward.
“You should be careful.”
Claire looked at him.
“Or what?”
Alexander’s face hardened.
“Or you’ll discover exactly what happens when someone threatens my family.”
A nervous silence followed.
Then a small voice came from the top of the staircase.
“Daddy?”
Everyone turned.
Lily Carver stood there holding her stuffed rabbit.
Her eyes were filled with confusion.
She looked at Hannah.
Then at the cut hair on the floor.
“Did Claire hurt Mommy?”
Claire’s face changed instantly.
Because she knew.
The one person she could never manipulate was the little girl who had always loved Hannah.
Alexander walked toward Lily.
“Yes.”
The little girl’s eyes filled with tears.
“Why?”
Nobody answered.
Because there was no answer that could make sense to a child.
Hannah walked over and gently hugged Lily.
“It’s okay.”
But Lily shook her head.
“No, Mommy. It’s not.”
She looked directly at Claire.
“You were mean to her.”
The innocence of a child exposed what everyone else had ignored.
Claire’s jaw tightened.
She looked around.
Nobody was defending her.
Not anymore.
Then Alexander’s phone rang.
He glanced at the screen.
His expression changed.
“What is it?” Hannah asked.
Alexander answered quietly.
“It’s my attorney.”
A pause.
Then his eyes moved toward Claire.
“He found something.”
Claire immediately noticed the change.
“What?”
Alexander ended the call.
“Apparently, this wasn’t the first time someone tried to harm my wife.”
Hannah froze.
Because suddenly…
She realized.
Someone had been watching her.
May you like
Someone had been planning this.
And Claire Whitlock might not have acted alone.
