Chapter 11 - The Serpent’s Mark

Elias stared at the silver coin on the stone table, his usually composed features turning to stone. The ambient light from the ballroom spilled onto the terrace, illuminating the two-headed serpent engraved into the metal.

He didn't touch it. He looked at it as if it were a live grenade.

"Elias?" Charlotte asked, her voice trembling slightly from the adrenaline. "Do you know what that is?"

"I know I should have killed Richard Sterling when I had the chance," Elias said, his voice deadly quiet. He finally reached out, picking up the coin with a silk handkerchief from his pocket, careful not to leave fingerprints. "This isn't a corporate calling card, Charlotte. This is a death sentence."

He guided her back into the penthouse, bypassing the gala entirely through a private security corridor. Once the heavy oak doors of his office clicked shut, he tossed the wrapped coin onto his desk.

"The two-headed serpent belongs to the Obsidian Syndicate," Elias explained, pouring two fingers of scotch and handing it to her. "They aren't a company. They're a ghost organization. A collective of ultra-wealthy families who control black markets, weapon manufacturing, and offshore espionage. They don't buy companies; they consume them."

Charlotte took a sip of the scotch, the burn grounding her. "The man on the terrace... he said Richard was just holding the door open for them."

Elias cursed under his breath, pacing the length of the office. "Richard must have borrowed capital from them to secure his interim position and cover his tracks after your mother’s crash. He used Solmere as collateral. And now that Richard is in federal custody, Solmere’s debt has defaulted."

"They think they can take my company?" Charlotte’s fear morphed instantly into white-hot anger. "I am the majority shareholder. I have the Vanguard legal team. They have a piece of metal."

Elias stopped pacing and looked at her, his gray eyes filled with a terrifying sincerity. "Charlotte, Vanguard can protect you in a courtroom. But the Syndicate doesn't use lawyers. They use accidents. Plane crashes. Brake failures."

Charlotte froze as the reality washed over her. Her mother’s plane.

"It wasn't just Richard," she whispered, her hands gripping the glass tightly. "Richard paid the mechanics, but he didn't have the connections to orchestrate an untraceable sabotage. The Syndicate did."

"Which means," Elias said, closing the distance between them and gripping her shoulders, "the man you spoke to tonight is likely the one who ordered your mother’s death. And starting tomorrow, you are not leaving my sight. Understood?"

Charlotte looked up at the fierce, protective fire in his eyes. She didn't want to be a prisoner again, but she wasn't a fool. "Understood."
