Chapter 16 - The Cost of War

The sterile, blinding white of the Vanguard private hospital wing was suffocating.

Charlotte sat in a stiff leather chair outside the surgical theater, her hands coated in dried blood. Her pristine white blouse was ruined, a stark reminder of the violence that had just unfolded in the Hudson Valley.

For three agonizing hours, Elias had been under the knife. The sniper’s bullet had shattered his collarbone and narrowly missed his subclavian artery. If the Vanguard medics had been a minute slower, he would have bled out on the tarmac.

The heavy doors to the operating room finally swung open. The lead surgeon, a man who charged a million dollars a year to keep Vanguard’s operatives alive, pulled off his mask.

“He is stable, Miss Vale,” the surgeon said quietly. “The bullet was extracted, and the bleeding is controlled. He is unconscious, but he will survive. You can see him in a few minutes.”

Charlotte let out a breath she felt she had been holding for an eternity. She closed her eyes, the adrenaline crashing out of her system, leaving only a cold, hollow rage.

She walked into the recovery room. Elias looked terrifyingly pale against the white sheets, his broad chest heavily bandaged, tubes and monitors pulsing with a rhythmic beep. Seeing the untouchable, lethal Elias Thorne reduced to this ignited a terrifying fire in Charlotte’s soul.

She stepped closer, gently brushing a stray lock of dark hair from his forehead.

“You told me not to let him win, Elias,” Charlotte whispered into the quiet room. Her voice held no warmth, no fear. Only a chilling, absolute resolve. “I promise you, I will tear his world apart piece by piece.”

Charlotte turned on her heel and walked out of the hospital room. Waiting for her in the corridor was Arthur Penhaligon, flanked by a dozen heavily armed Vanguard security contractors. The old board member looked terrified, clutching a secure tablet.

“Charlotte, the board is panicking,” Arthur stammered. “Julian Castellan sent a message to the media. He is claiming Obsidian Holdings legally repossessed the R&D division. If those stolen prototypes hit the black market, the government will sanction Solmere into bankruptcy.”

Charlotte didn't blink. She reached out, taking the tablet from Arthur’s trembling hands.

“Julian thinks this is a game of chess, Arthur,” Charlotte said, her eyes flashing dangerously as she began typing a series of encrypted commands into the Vanguard network. “He thinks he took my queen. He doesn't realize I’m flipping the board.”

“What are you doing?” Arthur asked, his voice shaking.

“I am making a phone call to the United States Secretary of Defense,” Charlotte replied smoothly. “It’s time to show the Obsidian Syndicate what a scorched-earth policy really looks like.”
