Chapter 18 - The Viper’s Nest

The Obsidian auction floor was a spectacle of sickening wealth. Champagne flowed, classical music played softly in the background, and men in tailored suits examined holographic displays of Solmere’s weaponized drone technology.

Julian Castellan stood on the grand stage, bathed in a spotlight. He looked arrogant, untouchable, the silver briefcase containing the master drive resting on a velvet pedestal beside him.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Julian’s voice boomed through the speakers, dripping with charisma. “Welcome to the dawn of a new era. What you see before you is the culmination of Solmere’s two-billion-dollar R&D division. The starting bid for the master drive is five hundred million.”

Bidding paddles shot up immediately. The numbers on the massive digital screen behind him skyrocketed. Six hundred million. Eight hundred. One billion.

Julian’s green eyes gleamed with triumph. He had broken Charlotte Vale. He had won.

BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.

Suddenly, the massive digital screens flickered. The bidding numbers vanished, replaced by a glaring, blood-red warning symbol: CLASSIFIED UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE.

The room fell dead silent. The champagne flutes stopped clinking.

Julian frowned, tapping his earpiece. “Control room, fix the screens immediately. What is this?”

“It isn't a glitch, Julian.”

The voice echoed through the bunker’s PA system. It was a voice Julian recognized instantly. The heavy steel doors at the back of the auction hall swung open with a hydraulic hiss.

Charlotte Vale walked in.

She was flanked by Elias, who held a heavy tactical rifle in his good arm, and twenty Vanguard elite operatives. The crowd of international criminals parted instantly, murmuring in confusion and rising panic.

Julian’s face twisted in fury. “Charlotte! You arrogant fool. You walked right into my stronghold. Guards! Kill them!”

The mercenaries raised their weapons, but a sudden, deafening rumble shook the bunker. The ceiling vibrated as explosives breached the upper ventilation shafts. Ropes dropped from the ceiling, and dozens of Interpol strike teams and US Navy SEALs repelled into the room, assault rifles raised with laser sights painting Julian’s mercenaries.

“FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!”

The sheer overwhelming force of the international military coalition shattered any illusion of safety. Julian’s mercenaries, realizing they were outgunned ten to one, slowly lowered their weapons.

Julian stared in absolute disbelief as his empire crumbled in seconds.

Charlotte walked down the center aisle, her red-soled boots echoing against the concrete floor. She stopped at the base of the stage, looking up at Julian with an expression of pure, unadulterated icy contempt.
