Chapter 9 - The Solmere Gala

Three days later, the Solmere Hotel was transformed.

The grand ballroom was a masterpiece of opulent wealth. Thousands of white roses cascaded from the balconies, crystal chandeliers cast a golden glow over the dance floor, and a live orchestra played soft, sweeping symphonies. The guest list was a literal who's-who of global power: politicians, tech billionaires, media moguls, and European royalty.

They were all there for one reason: to see the ghost who had reclaimed her empire.

When the grand doors to the balcony opened, the orchestra paused, and a hush fell over the room of five hundred people.

Charlotte Vale stood at the top of the sweeping marble staircase.

If she had looked intimidating in the boardroom, tonight she looked like an absolute goddess. She wore a custom-made, floor-length gown of midnight blue velvet that clung perfectly to her silhouette, with a daring slit up the thigh. A staggering diamond choker circled her neck, catching the light like captured stars.

She began her descent.

Every eye in the room was glued to her. The men stared in awe; the women whispered behind their champagne flutes in a mix of jealousy and deep respect. The socialites who had laughed at her in the lobby days ago now lowered their heads, desperate to avoid her gaze, terrified she might remember their faces.

Waiting for her at the bottom of the stairs was Elias Thorne.

He wore a bespoke black tuxedo that fit him with lethal perfection. As Charlotte reached the final step, he held out his hand. She took it, the warmth of his palm grounding her amidst the sea of staring predators.

“You look… devastating,” Elias murmured, kissing the back of her hand.

“That was the goal,” Charlotte replied with a small, dangerous smile. “Shall we face the wolves?”

Together, they moved through the ballroom. It was a masterclass in power dynamics. Charlotte greeted old family friends with grace, dismissed sycophants with polite freezing smiles, and established dominance with every word she spoke. She wasn't just Eleanor’s daughter anymore; she was the Queen of Solmere.

But as the night wore on, the glittering facade began to feel suffocating. Charlotte excused herself, stepping out onto one of the private terraces overlooking the Manhattan skyline to catch her breath.

The cool night air was a relief. She closed her eyes for a moment, listening to the muffled music from inside.

“It is quite a heavy crown, isn't it?”

Charlotte’s eyes snapped open. She turned around sharply.

Standing in the shadows of the terrace, leaning casually against the stone balustrade, was a man she had never seen before.
