Chapter 12 - A Hostile Boardroom
The morning after the gala, the Solmere Empire woke up to a new ruler.
Charlotte arrived at the towering Solmere Headquarters in downtown Manhattan in a bulletproof Maybach, flanked by Vanguard security contractors. She wore a pristine ivory suit, her hair pulled back into a severe, elegant chignon.
When she stepped onto the executive floor, the whispers stopped. Assistants scrambled out of her way. The air was thick with tension.
She walked directly into the glass-walled boardroom where the executive committee was waiting. They looked terrified.
"Good morning," Charlotte said coldly, taking the head chair—her rightful seat. "Let’s skip the pleasantries. I want a full forensic audit of every subsidiary Richard Sterling touched in the last six months. Every wire transfer, every shell corporation."
Arthur Penhaligon cleared his throat nervously. "Miss Vale... Charlotte. There is a complication. This morning, our legal department received a notice of seizure."
Charlotte’s eyes narrowed. "From whom?"
"A private equity firm operating under the name Obsidian Holdings," Arthur replied, sliding a thick legal binder toward her. "According to these documents, Richard Sterling secretly signed over 40% of Solmere’s R&D division—specifically the military tech contracts—as collateral for a massive private loan just days before his arrest."
Charlotte opened the binder, scanning the heavily redacted documents. The signature was Richard's, but the terms were predatory. It was a hostile takeover masked as a loan default.
"The R&D division is the most profitable arm of this company," Charlotte said, her voice dangerously calm. "If they take 40%, they gain a seat on this board. They get a vote."
"They already have one, sweetheart."
The boardroom doors swung open.

Charlotte’s head snapped up. Standing in the doorway, wearing a bespoke navy suit and a mocking, devastatingly handsome smile, was the man from the terrace. His piercing green eyes locked onto hers.
"Julian Castellan," he announced, stepping into the room as if he owned it. He threw a leather briefcase onto the table. "CEO of Obsidian Holdings. And as of 8:00 AM this morning, Solmere’s newest senior board member."
