Chapter 14 - Unholy Alliances

Rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows of Charlotte’s penthouse. It was 2:00 AM, but neither she nor Elias had slept.

The coffee table was covered in financial blueprints, legal codes, and encrypted files they had pulled from Solmere’s private servers. The deeper they dug into Richard’s tenure, the more horrifying the truth became. Julian Castellan hadn't just appeared; he had been sinking his claws into Solmere for a year, placing loyalists in key executive positions.

"Three vice presidents," Elias said, rubbing his tired eyes. He had discarded his tie hours ago, his white shirt unbuttoned at the collar. "Castellan has three of your VPs in his pocket. If he calls for a board vote on the R&D division, he has the numbers to force a buyout."

Charlotte sat on the floor, surrounded by papers, a half-empty glass of red wine in her hand. The exhaustion was setting in, but the fire in her chest refused to die down.

"We need a counter-move," Charlotte muttered, pulling her hair out of its messy bun. "If Vanguard can't block the asset transfer in court, we have to bleed Obsidian Holdings. We bankrupt the subsidiary before Castellan can claim it."

Elias stopped reading and looked down at her. "You want to tank your own R&D division? Charlotte, that’s a two-billion-dollar loss. The board will eat you alive."

"It’s a scorched-earth tactic," she said, looking up at him, her dark eyes fierce. "If I devalue the assets, Castellan’s collateral becomes worthless. The debt nullifies. I'd rather lose an arm than let him take the whole body."

Elias stared at her in silence. The ruthless, brilliant calculation in her eyes was breathtaking. She was no longer a victim; she was a warlord.

He moved off the sofa, sitting on the floor next to her. The proximity was sudden and electric. The quiet hum of the rain against the glass seemed to amplify the sound of their breathing.

"Your mother would be terrified of you," Elias murmured, his voice a low rumble.

"And you?" Charlotte asked, her voice softening, her eyes flicking down to his lips for a fraction of a second. "Are you terrified of me, Elias?"

Elias reached out, his warm, rough thumb tracing the line of her jaw. The professional walls they had built over the last six months were crumbling under the weight of the war they were fighting together.

"I'm terrified of what I’d do to anyone who tries to hurt you," Elias confessed, leaning in slowly.

Charlotte’s breath hitched. She closed the distance, her lips mere millimeters from his.

Suddenly, Elias’s encrypted phone buzzed violently on the coffee table. The shrill sound shattered the moment. Elias pulled back, clearing his throat as he grabbed the device.

His face drained of color as he read the message.

"Charlotte," Elias said, his voice urgent. "Castellan just moved. He didn't wait for the vote. Armed mercenaries just breached the upstate R&D facility. They’re stealing the physical prototypes."
