Chapter 15 - The Viper Strikes

The upstate Solmere R&D facility was supposed to be a fortress, nestled in the dense forests of the Hudson Valley. By the time Charlotte and Elias arrived in the Vanguard tactical helicopter, the sky was bruised with the dark purple of pre-dawn.
Smoke billowed from the main gates. The facility’s security detail had been overwhelmed.
"Stay in the chopper," Elias commanded, racking the slide of a sleek, black tactical rifle. He was no longer the corporate lawyer; he was Vanguard’s executioner.
"It's my facility, Elias. I'm not hiding," Charlotte snapped, grabbing a bulletproof vest from the rack and strapping it over her designer blouse.
Before Elias could argue, a massive explosion rocked the northern wing of the compound. The shockwave rattled the helicopter, shattering the reinforced windows.
"They're blowing the server vaults!" Elias yelled over the deafening alarm sirens. He grabbed Charlotte’s arm, hauling her out of the chopper as a barrage of gunfire erupted from the tree line.
They scrambled behind a concrete barricade as bullets sparked against the tarmac. Through the smoke, Charlotte saw black SUVs peeling out of the loading bays, carrying the stolen tech—billions of dollars of classified military prototypes.
"They're getting away!" Charlotte screamed over the gunfire.
"I’ve got Vanguard strike teams cutting off the main road," Elias shouted, returning fire to keep the remaining mercenaries pinned down. "Stay down, Charlotte!"
But Charlotte saw something that made her blood freeze.
Walking calmly out of the burning facility, flanked by two heavily armed guards, was Julian Castellan. He wasn't running. He was strolling, a silver briefcase in his hand—the master drive containing all of Solmere’s patents.
Julian stopped by the last remaining SUV. He looked across the smoke-filled courtyard, his eyes locking directly onto Charlotte’s behind the barricade. Even from a distance, she could see that wicked, mocking smile.
He raised two fingers to his temple in a sarcastic salute.
"Elias, he has the master drive!" Charlotte yelled, pointing through the smoke.
Elias didn't hesitate. He broke cover, sprinting across the open tarmac toward the SUV, raising his rifle.
"Elias, no!"
The crack of a sniper rifle echoed through the valley.
Elias’s body jerked violently mid-stride. A spray of crimson painted the air as he was thrown backward by the force of the impact, collapsing onto the cold concrete.
Julian’s SUV tires screeched as the vehicle sped away into the forest, leaving the compound burning.
"ELIAS!" Charlotte screamed, tearing off her vest and sprinting across the line of fire. She slid onto the tarmac, dropping to her knees beside him.
Blood was pooling rapidly under Elias’s shoulder. His eyes were half-open, his breathing shallow and ragged.
"Elias, look at me! Look at me!" Charlotte cried, pressing her hands desperately against his wound to stop the bleeding. Her pristine white blouse was instantly stained with his blood.
He groaned, his bloodstained hand weakly reaching up to grip her wrist. "Charlotte... don't... let him..."

"I won't," she sobbed, holding onto him as Vanguard medics rushed toward them from the tree line. The terrifying reality of Julian Castellan’s game had fully set in. This wasn't corporate espionage anymore.
It was war. And Charlotte Vale was ready to become a monster to win it.
