Chapter 5 - The Heir Returns

The Solmere Executive Boardroom was a fortress of mahogany and glass, soundproofed and detached from the rest of the world. Inside, twelve of the most powerful shareholders in the country sat around a massive table.
At the head of the table sat Richard Sterling.
He was a handsome man in his fifties, with silver hair and a smile that never quite reached his eyes. Beside him sat his daughter, Victoria, who had somehow managed to talk her way out of the security holding room and changed into a fresh designer dress. She looked smug, sipping sparkling water as if the ugly incident in the lobby had never happened.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Richard said, his voice smooth and commanding. He slid a thick leather-bound folder to the center of the table. "We have grieved the tragic loss of Eleanor Vale for six months. Her daughter, Charlotte, is unstable, missing, and unfit to lead. The market is getting anxious. Solmere needs stability. This document permanently transfers all executive voting rights to me."
He uncapped a solid gold Montblanc pen. "Once you all sign, we can finally move forward."
An older board member, Arthur Penhaligon, frowned. "Richard, this feels entirely too fast. The Vale family built this company. Completely cutting the bloodline..."
"The bloodline is dead, Arthur," Victoria interrupted with a cruel smile. "Charlotte is probably living on the streets. She’s a failure. My father is the only one who can save this company."
Richard nodded solemnly, pressing the pen to the paper. "For the good of Solmere."
BANG.
The heavy oak doors of the boardroom violently swung open, crashing against the walls.
The entire board jumped. Richard’s pen froze just inches from the paper.
Standing in the doorway, flanked by four Vanguard & Pierce private security contractors, was Elias Thorne.
"I apologize for the interruption, gentlemen," Elias said, his voice echoing loudly in the silent room. He stepped inside, adjusting his cuffs casually. "But there seems to be a minor error in today’s agenda."
"Elias!" Richard snapped, standing up, his face turning purple with rage. "What is the meaning of this? This is a closed door meeting! Security!"
"Security works for the majority shareholder, Richard," Elias replied calmly. "Which is why they aren't coming for me."
"I am the majority shareholder!" Richard roared.
"No," a cold, feminine voice rang out from the hallway. "You're a thief."
The room collectively held its breath as a woman stepped out from behind Elias and walked into the light of the boardroom. The clicking of her red-soled heels on the hardwood floor sounded like the ticking of a time bomb.
Victoria let out a strangled gasp, her glass of sparkling water slipping from her hand and shattering on the floor.
It was the beggar from the lobby. The trash she had dragged across the floor. But now, dressed in millions of dollars of couture, with the Solmere family crest resting against her chest, the truth was undeniable.
Charlotte Vale had returned.
Charlotte walked directly to the head of the table. She didn't look at the board members. She didn't look at Victoria, who was trembling violently in her chair. She locked eyes solely with Richard Sterling.
"Charlotte..." Richard whispered, all the color draining from his face. "You're... you're supposed to be..."
"Dead?" Charlotte finished the sentence for him, a terrifying, razor-sharp smile curving her lips. She reached forward, snatching the gold pen from Richard’s trembling hand, and picked up the transfer documents he was about to sign.
May you like
With one swift motion, she ripped the papers in half and let the pieces flutter to the floor like snow.
"You’re sitting in my chair, Richard," Charlotte whispered, leaning in close. "Get out."
