Chapter 2 - The Proxy

The crowd parted instantly, making way for the man striding across the marble floor.

Elias Thorne.

Even in a room full of powerful people, Elias was a force of nature. He was a senior partner at Vanguard & Pierce, the most ruthless corporate law firm in the country, and more importantly, the independent executor of the Vale Estate. Tall, impeccably dressed in a charcoal Tom Ford suit, with piercing slate-gray eyes that missed nothing, he commanded the room without raising his voice.

Victoria’s arrogant sneer vanished, instantly replaced by a sickeningly sweet smile. She smoothed down her silk dress and took a step toward him. "Mr. Thorne! I apologize for this... disturbance. Some homeless drug addict sneaked in. I was just having security handle it. You know how protective my father is of the Solmere brand."

Elias didn’t look at Victoria. His eyes were fixed on the young woman on the floor.

He took in the scraped, bloody palms. The bruised cheek. The faded clothes. And then, his gaze met Charlotte’s. For a fraction of a second, the air between them crackled. A silent message passed between the ruthless lawyer and the battered heiress.

It’s time, her eyes said.

Elias stepped past Victoria as if she were a piece of furniture. He walked until he was standing directly over Charlotte. To the absolute shock of everyone in the lobby, the cold, untouchable Elias Thorne knelt on one knee, unbothered by the dust on the floor.

He pulled a monogrammed silk handkerchief from his breast pocket and gently held it out to her.

"Are you severely injured, Miss?" he asked, his voice soft enough for only her and Victoria to hear, though the threat beneath it was palpable.

Victoria gasped, her face flushing with indignation. "Elias! What are you doing? She’s filthy! She just tried to steal from the VIP suites!"

Charlotte ignored Victoria. She took the handkerchief, her bloody fingers brushing against Elias’s clean ones. "I’ll survive, Mr. Thorne," she murmured, her voice steady. "Though I believe the hospitality here leaves much to be desired."

Elias stood up, offering his hand. Charlotte took it, and he pulled her to her feet with effortless strength. He didn't let go of her hand, turning to face Victoria. The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.

"Miss Sterling," Elias said, his voice deadly quiet. "You have exactly three seconds to explain why you have assaulted a guest in this hotel."

"A guest?!" Victoria laughed, a shrill, nervous sound. "Look at her! She’s trash! My father owns this hotel, and I say she is a trespasser!"

"Your father," Elias corrected, his eyes narrowing, "is the interim CEO. He owns nothing. He is an employee. And if you ever lay a hand on this woman again, I will personally see to it that you spend the rest of your glamorous life in a federal penitentiary."

Victoria took a step back, her face draining of color. "You... you can't talk to me like that. Who even is she?!"

Elias turned to the head of security, who was sweating profusely. "Take Miss Sterling to the lobby holding room. She is not to leave until I say so. Call the police and have her charged with aggravated assault."

"What?!" Victoria screamed as the guards, now realizing who held the real power, grabbed her arms. "Get your hands off me! Do you know who I am?!"

"I know exactly who you are, Victoria," Charlotte finally spoke, her voice ringing clear across the lobby. "And by 3:00 PM today, you’ll be nothing."
