Chapter 6 - The Usurper’s Despair

The silence in the boardroom was absolute. It was the kind of silence that precedes a devastating storm.

Richard Sterling stared at the torn pieces of his carefully drafted takeover document fluttering to the mahogany floor. His mind struggled to process the reality standing before him. Charlotte Vale, the girl he thought he had successfully broken and discarded, was glaring down at him with eyes as cold and unforgiving as a winter ocean.

“You’re… you’re not well, Charlotte,” Richard stammered, attempting to recover his composure. He looked around the table at the shocked faces of the board members. “Gentlemen, please. The poor girl has suffered a psychotic break since her mother’s passing. She doesn't know what she's doing.”

“Psychotic break?” Charlotte laughed, a dry, humorless sound that sent a chill through the room. “Is that what you call surviving a targeted assassination attempt, Richard? Or was I just supposed to quietly drown when my car was run off the road three months ago?”

Gasps erupted around the table. Arthur Penhaligon, the oldest board member, stood up. “Assassination? Charlotte, my dear, what on earth are you talking about?”

“Lies!” Victoria suddenly screeched, leaping from her chair. The smugness was entirely gone, replaced by frantic desperation. “She’s lying! She’s a street rat! Elias, you can’t possibly believe this… this impostor! She attacked me in the lobby!”

“Sit down and shut your mouth, Victoria,” Elias Thorne commanded, his voice slicing through her hysteria like a whip. He didn't even look at her, his eyes fixed dead on Richard.

Elias stepped up to the table, opening his leather briefcase. He pulled out a thick stack of documents and tossed them onto the polished wood.

“What you are looking at,” Elias announced to the board, “is a comprehensive audit of the Solmere offshore accounts. For the past year, Richard Sterling has been funneling company capital into shell corporations based in the Cayman Islands. But that is merely corporate fraud.”

Elias pulled a silver flash drive from his pocket—the very drive Charlotte had risked her life to retrieve.

“This,” Elias continued, his voice dropping to a deadly tenor, “contains encrypted communications between Mr. Sterling and the aviation mechanics who serviced Eleanor Vale’s private jet before its final, fatal flight. It includes wire transfers made from Richard's private accounts to those mechanics less than twenty-four hours after the crash.”

The boardroom erupted into chaos. Board members shouted, slamming their hands on the table. Richard’s face went from pale to a sickly, ashen gray. He stumbled backward, knocking his heavy leather chair to the floor.

“It’s fabricated!” Richard shouted over the noise, sweat beading on his forehead. “Elias has always wanted control of the trust! He manufactured this to frame me!”

Charlotte leaned across the table, bracing her hands on the polished wood. She looked Richard dead in the eye.

“You underestimated my mother, Richard,” Charlotte whispered softly, ensuring only he could hear the venom in her words. “And you severely underestimated me. I own 51% of this company. I own this building. I own the chair you were just sitting in. You have nothing.”

She stood up straight and looked at the private security contractors waiting by the door.

“Mr. Thorne,” Charlotte said, her voice ringing with absolute authority. “Call the authorities.”
