CHAPTER 10 The True Heir

CHAPTER 10
The True Heir
The warehouse was silent except for the faint hum of the hanging light.
Thomas Bennett slowly raised his head.
Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.
His wrists were secured with heavy steel restraints, but his eyes remained steady.
Charles Whitmore leaned against the table, patiently waiting.
"Tell me where she is."
Thomas smiled faintly.
"You've spent twenty years looking."
Charles returned the smile.
"And I'm closer than ever."
"You'll never find her."
Charles walked behind him.
"I already have."
Thomas's heartbeat quickened, but he refused to show it.
"No."
Charles stopped beside his chair.
"You really think Ethan marrying Claire was an accident?"
Thomas's eyes widened.
"What did you say?"
Charles laughed.
"You still don't understand."
He leaned closer.
"I arranged it."
Across Manhattan, Ethan couldn't stop thinking about Olivia's call.
Claire Bennett.
Her name inside the hidden safe.
The words echoed in his mind.
Only the rightful heir may claim the truth.
Claire sat beside him in the penthouse library.
Neither of them had spoken for several minutes.
Finally, she broke the silence.
"Ethan..."
He looked at her.
"What if all of this is because of me?"
He immediately shook his head.
"No."
"But every clue leads back to my family."
"Not your family."
He took her hand.
"The people who destroyed both our families."
Claire looked down.
"I don't even know who I am anymore."
Ethan gently lifted her chin.
"I do."
She met his eyes.
"You're my wife."
"And nothing we discover will ever change that."
For the first time in days...
Claire smiled.
A small smile.
But a real one.
At Callahan Tower, Richard sat alone in his office.
He hadn't slept.
The photograph of his father rested on his desk.
For years, he had admired the man.
Respected him.
Feared him.
Now he questioned everything.
A soft knock interrupted his thoughts.
"Come in."
The door opened.
Olivia entered.
She looked nervous.
"Dad."
Richard managed a tired smile.
"You shouldn't be here."
"I found the safe."
His expression froze.
"So Ethan knows."
"He knows Claire's name was inside."
Richard closed his eyes.
"The truth is finally catching us."
Olivia stepped closer.
"Dad..."
"Was Grandpa really a criminal?"
Richard remained silent.
"Dad."
He looked at his daughter.
"Your grandfather built an empire."
"That isn't what I asked."
Richard sighed.
"No."
"He wasn't just a businessman."
Olivia whispered,
"What was he?"
Richard's answer barely left his lips.
"A king."
Meanwhile...
Marcus spent the night tracing every financial record connected to Bennett Holdings.
At 2:17 a.m., something unusual appeared.
One final account.
Inactive for twenty years.
Until yesterday.
Marcus leaned toward the screen.
Someone had accessed it.
Using an authorization code.
The account holder's name appeared.
He stared in disbelief.
"No..."
He immediately called Ethan.
"Ethan."
"I'm listening."
"I found the last Bennett account."
"And?"
"It wasn't opened by Thomas."
Silence.
"It was opened by Claire."
Ethan frowned.
"That's impossible."
"I know."
"Claire has never even heard of it."
Marcus agreed.
"Which means someone used her identity."
Ethan looked toward Claire, who had fallen asleep on the couch.
"They're framing her."
Marcus answered quietly.
"And if federal investigators see this account before we prove it's fake..."
"They'll arrest her."
The next morning, FBI agents arrived at Callahan Tower.
Special Agent Daniel Brooks stepped out of the elevator carrying a thick case file.
He walked directly into Richard's office.
"Mr. Callahan."
Richard stood.
"What can I do for you?"
Daniel placed several documents on the desk.
"We're reopening the Bennett investigation."
Richard's face remained calm.
"I thought that case was closed."
"So did we."
Daniel opened the file.
"Until new evidence surfaced."
Richard looked at the documents.
His heart nearly stopped.
The payment agreement.
The partnership contract.
Bank transfers.
Everything.
"Where did you get these?"
Daniel smiled slightly.
"Anonymous source."
Richard knew exactly what that meant.
Someone wanted the government involved.
Someone was forcing the truth into the open.
At the same time...
Victoria sat in her private study.
A phone rested in front of her.
It rang once.
She answered immediately.
"Is it done?"
Charles Whitmore's voice came through.
"Not yet."
Victoria frowned.
"What went wrong?"
"Thomas refuses to talk."
She looked out the window.
"Then make him."
Charles was quiet.
"I've tried."
Victoria's voice became colder.
"You promised me the ledger."
"I promised I'd find it."
A pause.
"And I will."
Victoria lowered her voice.
"You have forty-eight hours."
"If Ethan reaches the truth first..."
"...we all lose."
Hours later, Ethan and Claire visited Olivia at the old Callahan estate.
The hidden room was exactly as Olivia described.
Dust covered everything.
The walls smelled of old cedar.
The empty safe remained open.
Claire stepped closer.
Her fingers brushed across the metal door.
Something felt strange.
"Ethan."
"What?"
"There's something carved underneath."
He knelt beside her.
Very faintly, almost invisible beneath decades of dust, were several numbers.
Marcus photographed them immediately.
"They look like coordinates."
Claire looked confused.
"Coordinates to where?"
No one knew.
But Ethan felt something.
Hope.
Because for the first time...
they had a direction.
Marcus entered the coordinates into a mapping program.
The location appeared almost instantly.
Everyone stared at the screen.
"A cemetery?"
Olivia whispered.
The coordinates pointed to a small family cemetery nearly two hours outside New York.
Specifically...
one grave.
Emily Bennett.
Claire's mother.
Claire felt her chest tighten.
"My mother's grave?"
Marcus nodded slowly.
"I think your father left something there."
That evening, they drove to the cemetery.
Rain had begun to fall.
The old cemetery was almost deserted.
Rows of weathered headstones stretched beneath dark clouds.
Claire stopped in front of her mother's grave.
She knelt quietly.
"I've missed you."
A tear rolled down her cheek.
Ethan stood beside her.
Then Marcus noticed something unusual.
"The stone."
Everyone looked.
Emily Bennett's headstone was newer than the surrounding graves.
Almost too new.
Marcus carefully examined the base.
"There are fresh tool marks."
Ethan frowned.
"Someone's been here."
Very recently.
They carefully moved part of the stone.
Hidden beneath it...
was a small waterproof metal box.
Claire slowly lifted it out.
Inside were three items.
A silver key.
A memory card.
And a birth certificate.
Claire unfolded it.
Her hands began shaking uncontrollably.
Ethan looked over her shoulder.
Then his eyes widened.
The child's name on the certificate was not Claire Bennett.
Nor was it anyone they recognized.
The mother's name read:
Emily Bennett.
The father's name read:
Richard Callahan.
The date of birth was twenty-six years ago.
Five years before Ethan was born.
Olivia gasped.
"No..."
Claire stared at the document in disbelief.
"What does this mean?"
Richard Callahan...
had another child.
A daughter.
Hidden from the world.
Suddenly, every piece fell into place.
The "child" Olivia had overheard.
The "rightful heir."
The reason Thomas Bennett had been hunted.
The reason two families had been destroyed.
It had never been about money alone.
It had been about protecting the existence of one little girl.
A girl whose birth could destroy the Callahan empire.
Then Ethan noticed one final document beneath the birth certificate.
A handwritten note from Thomas.
He unfolded it.
It contained only one sentence.
"If you're reading this, she's still alive... but she's not the person you think she is."
The wind swept through the cemetery.
And somewhere in the darkness...
someone quietly watched them uncover the truth.
The hunter had become the hunted.
May you like
And the greatest secret of all...
had only just begun.
