CHAPTER 3 The Woman They Tried to Erase

CHAPTER 3

The Woman They Tried to Erase

The phone screen went dark.

But the woman's final words remained in Ethan's mind.

"The truth about who Claire really is."

For several seconds, he didn't move.

The noise of the Callahan Tower disappeared.

The voices outside his office.

The footsteps in the hallway.

The ringing phones.

Everything faded.

There was only one thought.

Claire.

His wife.

The woman he had loved for years.

The woman who had stood beside him when he had nothing.

Could she really be hiding something from him?

No.

The answer came instantly.

Not because he wanted to believe it.

Because he knew her.

Claire wasn't manipulative.

She wasn't calculating.

She wasn't someone who played games.

But someone had spent months trying to convince him otherwise.

And now, someone was trying to make him question the only person who had never betrayed him.

"Ethan."

Marcus's voice pulled him back.

"You heard something."

Ethan looked at him.

"Someone called."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"What did they say?"

Ethan hesitated.

He knew Marcus was his lawyer.

His closest advisor.

But repeating those words felt dangerous.

Because once he said them out loud, they became real.

"They said Claire is hiding something."

Marcus studied his face.

"And do you believe them?"

"No."

The answer was immediate.

Marcus nodded.

"Good."

Ethan looked at him.

"But I need to know why they said it."

Marcus closed the laptop.

"Then we find out."

Twenty minutes later, Ethan returned to the penthouse.

Claire was still there.

She was standing in the kitchen, preparing lunch.

A normal scene.

A peaceful scene.

The kind of scene Ethan had taken for granted.

Until yesterday.

Now he saw everything differently.

The way she moved carefully because of her injured wrist.

The way she avoided making noise.

The way she seemed like she was always trying not to take up space.

His chest tightened.

How had he allowed the woman he loved to feel like a guest in their own home?

Claire looked up.

"You're back early."

Ethan didn't answer.

He walked toward her.

"What?"

She immediately noticed something was wrong.

"What happened?"

Ethan looked into her eyes.

He wanted to ask.

He wanted to demand answers.

But he stopped himself.

Because he remembered something important.

Trust.

If he started this conversation with suspicion, he would become exactly what his family wanted.

Someone who doubted her.

"I need to ask you something."

Claire became still.

"Okay."

"Before we met..."

He paused.

"Was there something about your life you never told me?"

The question hurt her.

Not because she was guilty.

Because she understood what it meant.

Someone had put doubt in his mind.

"Why are you asking me this?"

Ethan looked away.

"Because someone is trying to make me question you."

Claire's expression changed.

"Who?"

"I don't know."

She studied him.

Then she quietly asked:

"And do you?"

Ethan looked back.

"Do I what?"

"Question me?"

The sadness in her voice was worse than anger.

"No."

He stepped closer.

"No, Claire."

"Then why does it feel like you do?"

The question stopped him.

Because she was right.

Even though he didn't believe the accusation...

he had brought it home.

He had carried someone else's poison into their marriage.

"I'm sorry."

Claire looked down.

"I don't want you to apologize."

"Then what do you want?"

She looked at him.

"The truth."

A long silence followed.

Then Ethan told her everything.

The financial files.

The shell company.

The phone call.

The warning.

He watched every emotion cross her face.

Shock.

Confusion.

Fear.

But not guilt.

Never guilt.

When he finished, Claire slowly sat down.

"Ethan..."

"What?"

"There is something I need to tell you."

His heart stopped.

Because those words were exactly what he feared.

"What is it?"

Claire looked at the floor.

"When I was twenty-two, I changed my last name."

Ethan remained silent.

"Why?"

"Because of my father."

The room became quiet.

"I didn't tell you because I was ashamed."

Ethan sat across from her.

"Claire, you know I don't care about that."

"You don't know the whole story."

"Then tell me."

She took a deep breath.

"My father was involved in financial crimes."

Ethan's expression changed.

"What kind?"

"Fraud. Manipulation. Illegal investments."

She swallowed.

"But I wasn't involved."

"I know."

"He used my identity without my permission."

Ethan stared at her.

"When I found out, I went to the authorities."

"And?"

"He disappeared."

A cold feeling moved through Ethan.

"Disappeared?"

Claire nodded.

"I spent years trying to rebuild my life."

She looked at him.

"That's why I changed my name."

Ethan understood.

But one thing still bothered him.

"Why would my family know about this?"

Claire looked confused.

"What?"

"Someone knew."

He explained.

"Someone said they know who you really are."

Claire's face lost color.

"Ethan..."

"What?"

"My father had enemies."

The words hung between them.

"People who believed I knew where he hid his money."

Ethan leaned forward.

"What money?"

Claire shook her head.

"I don't know."

"Claire."

"I'm serious."

Her eyes filled with fear.

"I never knew anything about his accounts."

Then Ethan remembered something.

The shell company.

The stolen files.

His mother's name.

A terrifying possibility entered his mind.

"What if your father and my family were connected?"

Claire went silent.

Neither of them wanted to say it.

But both were thinking the same thing.

Their families had crossed paths long before they met.

That evening, Ethan went to see his father.

Richard Callahan was in his private study.

The room where Ethan had learned business.

Where his father had taught him strategy.

Control.

Power.

But tonight, Ethan wasn't there as a son.

He was there as someone demanding answers.

Richard looked up.

"I knew you would come."

Ethan stopped.

"You knew?"

His father sighed.

"Your mother told me everything."

"Everything about what?"

Richard avoided his eyes.

And that was enough.

"Tell me the truth."

Silence.

Then Richard finally spoke.

"Claire's father was dangerous."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"So you knew?"

"Yes."

"And you still let me marry her?"

Richard looked at him.

"I tried to stop it."

"You tried to destroy my marriage."

"I tried to protect you."

Ethan laughed bitterly.

"By hurting my wife?"

Richard stood.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

Richard walked toward the window.

"Twenty years ago, your grandfather invested with Claire's father."

Ethan froze.

"What?"

"It ended badly."

"How badly?"

Richard turned around.

"People lost millions."

Ethan stared.

"And Claire's father?"

"He disappeared with the money."

A silence followed.

"You're saying Claire's family destroyed ours?"

Richard nodded.

But Ethan noticed something.

Something he couldn't ignore.

His father looked angry.

But also afraid.

"Why are you scared?"

Richard's expression changed.

"I'm not."

"Yes, you are."

Ethan stepped closer.

"You aren't afraid of Claire's father."

A pause.

"You're afraid of what happens if the truth comes out."

Richard said nothing.

And once again...

silence revealed everything.

That night, Ethan returned home later than usual.

Claire was asleep on the couch.

Waiting for him.

A blanket covered her.

A book rested beside her.

She had fallen asleep while trying to stay awake.

He looked at her for a long time.

The woman everyone seemed determined to blame.

The woman everyone wanted him to abandon.

But the more he searched for answers...

the more he realized something.

Claire wasn't the secret.

Claire was the person everyone had been trying to hide the secret from.

Ethan carefully covered her with another blanket.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message.

From the unknown number.

One photo.

His blood turned cold.

The picture showed Claire's father.

Standing beside Richard Callahan.

Twenty years ago.

And beneath the photo were six words:

"Your families built this lie together."

Ethan stared at the screen.

Because now he understood.

This was never about Claire.

It was never about his mother's hatred.

It was never about family acceptance.

It was about a secret buried for twenty years.

May you like

And someone was willing to destroy everyone...

to keep it buried.
