CHAPTER 17 The Key Hidden Since Birth

CHAPTER 17

The Key Hidden Since Birth

Ethan stood frozen.

Richard's last conversation replayed endlessly in his mind.

Then Marcus's phone rang.

It was an encrypted call from one of his cybersecurity contacts.

Marcus answered immediately.

"What did you find?"

He listened for nearly thirty seconds without speaking.

When the call ended, he slowly looked up.

"There was never a ledger."

Claire frowned.

"What?"

Marcus shook his head.

"Not in the way we thought."

Daniel crossed his arms.

"Explain."

Marcus turned his laptop toward them.

"The original financial network never relied on paper records."

"It relied on a secure access system."

Claire looked confused.

"So why did everyone keep talking about a ledger?"

Marcus answered,

"Because that was the code name."

Ethan sat down.

"Charles said the original ledger was a key."

Marcus nodded.

"Exactly."

"But what kind of key?"

Marcus enlarged an old engineering diagram recovered from Thomas's files.

At the center was a strange symbol.

A circular lock with six matching components.

Daniel immediately recognized it.

"My God..."

"What?"

"This was military technology."

Everyone looked at him.

"It required six authentication keys."

Marcus nodded.

"One for each founding member."

Claire whispered,

"So six people each carried one piece."

Marcus smiled grimly.

"Exactly."

Across the city...

Richard remained tied to the chair inside the abandoned hangar.

Charles slowly paced around him.

"You still don't understand, do you?"

Richard remained silent.

Charles continued.

"Arthur was brilliant."

"He knew no single person could ever control the fortune."

"So he divided access."

Richard finally spoke.

"Into six keys."

Charles smiled.

"You remember."

Richard looked directly at him.

"I also remember something you forgot."

Charles stopped walking.

"And what's that?"

Richard smiled for the first time.

"Arthur never trusted you."

Charles's smile disappeared.

Richard continued.

"You always thought you were his favorite."

"You weren't."

Charles's expression darkened.

"He chose me."

"No."

Richard shook his head.

"He used you."

Silence filled the hangar.

Finally Charles laughed.

"You still know how to provoke people."

Richard calmly answered,

"I'm simply telling the truth."

Back at the penthouse...

Claire carefully examined the contents of the metal box recovered from her mother's grave.

Only one item remained unexplained.

The silver key.

She picked it up.

"It's beautiful."

Marcus looked over.

"May I?"

He examined it under a magnifying lens.

"This isn't a house key."

Daniel leaned closer.

"What is it?"

Marcus pointed to microscopic markings along the edge.

"There are electronic contact points."

Claire frowned.

"So it's digital?"

Marcus nodded.

"Partly."

He suddenly stopped.

"Wait."

He rotated the key.

On the handle...

barely visible...

was a tiny engraving.

The number:

2

Everyone stared.

Claire whispered,

"Key number two."

Ethan immediately understood.

"If this is the second key..."

Marcus nodded.

"There are five others."

Daniel frowned.

"And Charles has been searching for all of them."

Claire looked down at the silver key.

"My father hid one."

Marcus quietly answered,

"Which means someone else hid the others."

Meanwhile...

Michael Donovan drove alone through the mountains.

The rehabilitation center had been abandoned.

He no longer needed to pretend to be a helpless old man.

He reached an isolated cabin deep inside the forest.

After checking the surroundings, he unlocked the door.

Inside waited an elderly woman.

She looked up from the fireplace.

"You were followed."

Michael nodded.

"I know."

She smiled sadly.

"It was only a matter of time."

Michael sat beside her.

"They've found Ethan."

The woman closed her eyes.

"So..."

"The children are finally involved."

Michael whispered,

"I'm sorry."

She looked at him gently.

"You protected them for as long as you could."

Back in New York...

Olivia entered Richard's abandoned office.

She wanted one final keepsake before the building changed hands.

Inside the bottom drawer...

she found an old wooden music box.

She remembered it from childhood.

Her father never let anyone touch it.

Curious, she wound the key.

A familiar melody filled the room.

Halfway through...

A hidden compartment quietly opened.

Inside rested another silver key.

This one engraved with the number:

4

Olivia gasped.

She immediately called Ethan.

"I found something."

"What?"

"A key."

Silence.

"It has the number four."

Marcus smiled.

"Richard hid one."

Claire looked at Ethan.

"My father hid number two."

Daniel slowly nodded.

"They divided them exactly as planned."

Late that evening...

Victoria returned to Callahan Manor.

The house felt strangely empty.

She walked into Arthur's old study.

For years she had avoided this room.

Tonight...

She locked the door behind her.

She knelt before Arthur's portrait.

Then reached beneath the fireplace.

A hidden compartment slid open.

Inside...

wrapped in black velvet...

was another silver key.

Engraved:

1

Victoria stared at it.

Her hands trembled.

"I told you I'd never use it."

She whispered to the empty room.

"But you left me no choice."

She reached for the key—

A voice interrupted her.

"I was wondering when you'd come back."

Victoria spun around.

Charles Whitmore stood in the doorway.

Smiling.

"You kept Arthur's key all these years."

Victoria slowly hid it behind her back.

"You'll never have it."

Charles laughed softly.

"I don't need yours."

She frowned.

"What?"

Charles stepped closer.

"I already have three."

Victoria's expression changed instantly.

"That's impossible."

Charles reached into his coat.

One by one...

he placed three silver keys on Arthur's desk.

Numbers:

3

5

6

Victoria stared in disbelief.

He already possessed half of the system.

Charles looked directly at her.

"You have number one."

"Claire has number two."

"Olivia has number four."

He smiled.

"And Ethan..."

"...is the final lock."

Victoria's breathing became uneven.

"What does that mean?"

Charles leaned close enough for only her to hear.

"It was never six keys."

She stared at him.

"The seventh piece..."

"...was hidden inside Ethan's body before he was born."

Victoria's face turned completely white.

She whispered,

"No..."

Charles smiled.

"Oh yes."

"The microchip Michael implanted to protect the network."

He looked toward the Manhattan skyline.

May you like

"And tomorrow..."

"I'm going to cut it out of your son's body."
