CHAPTER 9 The Puppet Master

CHAPTER 9

The Puppet Master

Thomas Bennett never lowered the gun.

The stranger stood less than ten feet away, calm and completely unafraid.

Most people would have backed away at the sight of a loaded weapon.

This man smiled.

"You've gotten older, Thomas."

Thomas narrowed his eyes.

"So have you."

The stranger adjusted the cuff of his tailored suit.

"Twenty years is a long time."

"It wasn't long enough."

Thomas's finger rested on the trigger.

"I should've finished this conversation decades ago."

The man chuckled.

"You were never the one asking the questions."

Thomas's voice turned cold.

"Tell me your name."

"You already know it."

Silence.

Then, almost reluctantly, Thomas whispered,

"Charles Whitmore."

The smile disappeared from the man's face.

"So you do remember."

Across town, Ethan couldn't shake the uneasy feeling that something terrible was about to happen.

Claire noticed him pacing across the living room.

"You've walked past that window at least thirty times."

Ethan stopped.

"I know."

"You're worried about my father."

He looked at her.

"I think whoever has been watching us knows we found him."

Claire's expression darkened.

"You think they're coming."

"I think they already have."

His phone rang before he could say another word.

Thomas.

Ethan answered immediately.

"Where are you?"

Thomas didn't waste time.

"Listen carefully."

His breathing was heavy.

"You don't have much time."

Ethan felt his pulse quicken.

"What's happening?"

"I know who was behind everything."

"Who?"

A pause.

Then Thomas said the name.

"Charles Whitmore."

Ethan frowned.

"I've never heard of him."

"You have."

"No."

Thomas's voice became urgent.

"You just don't know it yet."

"What does that mean?"

Before Thomas could answer—

A loud crash echoed through the phone.

Glass shattered.

Someone shouted.

The line filled with static.

"Thomas!"

No answer.

"Thomas!"

A gunshot exploded through the speaker.

Then...

Silence.

The call disconnected.

Claire's face turned pale.

"What happened?"

Ethan grabbed his keys.

"We're going."

They reached Thomas's apartment less than fifteen minutes later.

The front door hung open.

Police cars had not arrived yet.

Someone had been careful.

Inside, the apartment looked like a battlefield.

Broken furniture.

Shattered glass.

Bullet holes in the walls.

Claire's breathing became shallow.

"Dad?"

No response.

She ran through every room.

"Ethan!"

He rushed into the bedroom.

The room was empty.

But there was blood on the floor.

Not much.

Just enough to tell a story.

Marcus, who had arrived moments later, knelt beside it.

"It isn't enough for someone to bleed out."

Ethan looked around.

"So they took him."

Marcus nodded.

"It looks that way."

Claire stood frozen.

Her worst nightmare had happened again.

She had found her father.

And less than twenty-four hours later...

he was gone.

Again.

Detective Sarah Lawson arrived shortly afterward.

She had spent fifteen years investigating organized financial crime.

When she saw Ethan, she extended her hand.

"Mr. Callahan."

Ethan nodded.

"You know who I am."

Sarah gave a faint smile.

"Everyone in New York knows who you are."

She examined the apartment carefully.

"No signs of robbery."

"No valuables missing."

"This wasn't random."

Ethan folded his arms.

"I know."

Sarah looked at the blood.

"This was a targeted extraction."

Claire frowned.

"Extraction?"

Sarah nodded.

"They weren't trying to kill him here."

"They wanted him alive."

Ethan exchanged a glance with Marcus.

That somehow made things even worse.

Back at Callahan Tower, Richard sat alone in his office.

Victoria stormed inside.

"He's gone."

Richard looked up.

"I know."

"You knew this would happen."

Richard sighed.

"No."

Victoria slammed the door shut.

"You should've listened to me twenty years ago."

Richard stood.

"Enough."

"No."

Her voice shook with anger.

"This is your fault."

"My fault?"

"You refused to finish it."

Richard's face hardened.

"I never wanted Thomas dead."

Victoria stared at him.

"You still don't understand."

Richard frowned.

"Understand what?"

Victoria whispered,

"It was never about Thomas."

Silence.

Richard slowly realized what she meant.

"It was about..."

She nodded.

"The ledger."

Richard closed his eyes.

The ledger.

The one thing he had prayed would never resurface.

Meanwhile, Ethan searched every file Marcus had recovered.

One word kept appearing.

Ledger.

"What is it?"

Claire asked.

Marcus answered before Ethan could.

"In the old financial world..."

"...a ledger isn't just an accounting book."

Claire looked confused.

"What else can it be?"

Marcus leaned back.

"If someone recorded every illegal payment..."

"...every fake company..."

"...every hidden account..."

"...that ledger could destroy hundreds of powerful people."

Claire whispered,

"My father had it."

Marcus nodded.

"That's my guess."

Ethan stared at the screen.

"So that's why he disappeared."

"Not because of the money."

Marcus agreed.

"Because of the evidence."

Late that night...

Olivia called Ethan.

Her voice trembled.

"Ethan..."

"What happened?"

"I found something in Grandpa's old house."

"What?"

"A hidden room."

Ethan froze.

"There was a safe."

"And?"

Olivia swallowed.

"It was empty."

Ethan frowned.

"Then why are you calling?"

"Because someone wrote something inside."

"What?"

Olivia read the words slowly.

"'Only the rightful heir may claim the truth.'"

Claire looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

Olivia continued.

"Underneath it..."

"...there's a name."

Ethan held his breath.

"Whose name?"

Olivia's voice almost disappeared.

"Claire Bennett."

The room fell completely silent.

Claire stared at the phone in disbelief.

"My name?"

Olivia answered softly.

"Yes."

Ethan felt the ground disappear beneath him.

Nothing made sense anymore.

Why would his grandfather leave a hidden message with Claire's name?

Richard claimed Thomas Bennett betrayed the family.

Victoria wanted Claire out of their lives.

Someone kidnapped Thomas to recover the ledger.

And now...

Claire's name had been hidden inside the Callahan family's private safe for over twenty years.

At that same moment...

In an abandoned estate outside the city...

Thomas Bennett slowly opened his eyes.

His wrists were tied to a heavy metal chair.

A single light hung from the ceiling.

Charles Whitmore stood in front of him.

Still smiling.

"You survived."

Thomas coughed.

"What do you want?"

Charles pulled another chair closer.

"I want the same thing I've wanted for twenty years."

"The ledger?"

Charles laughed.

"No."

Thomas frowned.

"Then what?"

Charles leaned forward until their faces were only inches apart.

"The girl."

Thomas's expression changed instantly.

"You stay away from Claire."

Charles smiled.

"I'm not talking about Claire."

Thomas's heart skipped a beat.

Because he knew exactly who Charles meant.

The one secret he had sworn to protect.

The child Olivia had unknowingly mentioned.

The true heir.

The person whose identity had remained hidden for two decades.

Thomas closed his eyes.

Because he realized the nightmare was only beginning.

Charles whispered,

May you like

"Tell me where she is..."

"...or Ethan and Claire will die before sunrise."
