CHAPTER 19 The Lie That Created Two Families

CHAPTER 19

The Lie That Created Two Families

Ethan drove through Manhattan like a man possessed.

Rain hammered against the windshield.

The traffic lights blurred into streaks of red and gold.

Marcus sat in the passenger seat, furiously tracing Claire's phone signal.

Daniel and Olivia followed in another vehicle.

No one spoke.

No one needed to.

Every second mattered.

At Saint Gabriel Cemetery...

Eleanor Donovan pulled Claire behind an old stone mausoleum.

Bullets struck the marble walls, sending fragments into the air.

Claire struggled to catch her breath.

"You said you knew my mother."

Eleanor nodded while reloading her pistol.

"I did."

"You said you protected both daughters."

"Yes."

Claire stared at her.

"And Richard just told Ethan..."

"...that you gave birth to him."

Eleanor closed her eyes for a brief moment.

"I suppose the truth couldn't stay buried forever."

Claire whispered,

"What truth?"

Eleanor looked directly at her.

"I didn't give birth to Ethan."

Claire frowned.

"What?"

"I gave birth..."

"...to the child everyone believes was Ethan."

Across town...

Richard remained tied to the chair inside the aircraft hangar.

Charles calmly poured himself another glass of whiskey.

"You know what I admire most about you?"

Richard remained silent.

"You kept the secret."

Charles smiled.

"Even after all these years."

Richard finally spoke.

"It wasn't my secret to tell."

Charles nodded.

"No."

"It belonged to two mothers."

Ethan's SUV screeched to a stop outside the cemetery gates.

Before he could step out—

Marcus grabbed his arm.

"Wait."

"What?"

Marcus pointed toward the security monitor in the guard booth.

Three camera feeds.

One showed Claire and Eleanor hiding behind the mausoleum.

The second showed Charles's men surrounding the cemetery.

The third...

showed another vehicle entering through the rear gate.

Marcus zoomed in.

The driver.

Amelia Ross.

Ethan's eyes widened.

"Ava."

Marcus slowly shook his head.

"Maybe."

Amelia had followed the GPS tracker Samuel secretly placed inside Claire's phone.

She parked behind the chapel.

The moment she stepped out—

Samuel appeared from the shadows.

"You shouldn't be here."

Amelia looked at him.

"I'm tired of running."

Samuel nodded sadly.

"So am I."

She looked toward the gunfire echoing through the cemetery.

"Who am I?"

Samuel remained silent.

"No more lies."

He sighed.

"You're ready."

Amelia slowly nodded.

"Tell me."

Samuel looked into her eyes.

"You were never abandoned."

"You were stolen."

Behind the mausoleum...

Claire finally demanded the truth.

"Eleanor."

"No more half-truths."

"Who is Ethan?"

Eleanor lowered her weapon.

Rain soaked her silver hair.

Thirty-one years of silence weighed heavily on her face.

"The night you were born..."

She looked at Claire.

"...Emily was already dying."

Claire's breathing caught.

"My mother..."

Eleanor nodded.

"She gave birth to you."

"And survived."

Claire frowned.

"I know."

"But six months earlier..."

Eleanor's voice cracked.

"I gave birth to a son."

"Ethan?"

"No."

Claire's eyes widened.

"The baby died."

Silence.

"For three days..."

"...I believed I had lost him."

At the hangar...

Charles slowly walked toward Richard.

"Tell me."

"Do you remember the fire?"

Richard closed his eyes.

"I remember everything."

Charles laughed softly.

"No."

"You remember the version we allowed."

He reached into an old filing cabinet.

Pulling out a faded hospital record.

He tossed it onto Richard's lap.

"The nursery fire."

Richard stared at the report.

Thirty-one years ago.

Three newborns.

One fire.

One dead infant.

Two missing identification bracelets.

Richard whispered,

"No..."

Charles smiled.

"You finally understand."

Back in the cemetery...

Eleanor continued.

"The hospital caught fire."

"Smoke everywhere."

"Nurses screaming."

"Parents searching for their children."

Claire listened in horror.

"When I found the nursery..."

"...the identification bracelets had fallen off."

Claire's heartbeat quickened.

"What happened?"

Eleanor looked toward the rain.

"Someone switched the babies."

Ethan, Marcus, and Daniel quietly moved between the gravestones.

Gunfire had stopped.

Too quiet.

Marcus whispered,

"This is wrong."

Daniel nodded.

"They're waiting."

Suddenly—

A shot rang out.

A bullet struck the ground inches from Ethan's feet.

Snipers.

"Move!"

Daniel shouted.

The three men scattered behind headstones.

Claire looked at Eleanor.

"Who switched them?"

Eleanor slowly answered.

"I don't know."

"But Arthur Callahan arrived less than an hour later."

Claire whispered,

"My God."

Eleanor nodded.

"He took one child."

"Victoria took another."

"And I..."

She closed her eyes.

"...went home believing my son had died."

Then Amelia appeared from behind the chapel.

"Eleanor!"

Eleanor turned.

Shock filled her face.

"Amelia?"

Claire looked back and forth between them.

"You know each other?"

Amelia nodded.

"She raised me."

Claire froze.

"What?"

Eleanor smiled sadly.

"I found her twenty-six years ago."

"Living in an orphanage."

"I couldn't save my son."

"But I could save someone else's daughter."

Claire slowly realized what she meant.

"You adopted Ava."

Amelia whispered,

"My real name..."

Eleanor nodded gently.

"...is Ava Bennett."

Claire burst into tears.

"My sister."

The two women embraced tightly for the first time in their lives.

At that exact moment...

Charles stepped from behind an old crypt.

Slowly clapping.

"Beautiful."

The sisters turned.

Charles smiled.

"Family reunions always make me emotional."

Ethan emerged from the opposite side with Daniel.

"Step away from them."

Charles laughed.

"You still think this story is about the Callahan fortune."

He looked toward Ava.

"It never was."

He raised a small electronic device.

"The seventh key."

Marcus's eyes widened.

"No!"

Charles pressed the button.

A sharp electronic pulse echoed through the cemetery.

Ethan suddenly grabbed his chest.

Pain exploded beneath his collarbone.

He collapsed to one knee.

Claire screamed.

"Ethan!"

Charles smiled calmly.

"The microchip is waking up."

Ethan struggled to breathe.

His scar began to burn as though something beneath the skin had come alive.

Charles looked at him with satisfaction.

"Now..."

May you like

"...let's find out..."

"...who you really are."
