CHAPTER 14 The Name Richard Refused to Speak

CHAPTER 14

The Name Richard Refused to Speak

The grandfather clock in the Callahan library struck midnight.

Each chime echoed through the silent mansion.

Ethan stood motionless, staring at Richard.

The words lingered in the air.

"...you're the only person standing between him and your real father."

Ethan's heart pounded.

"My real father..."

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"Who is he?"

Richard slowly lowered himself into a leather chair.

For the first time in Ethan's life, the man looked defeated.

Not like the billionaire who had negotiated impossible deals.

Not like the father who had always seemed unshakable.

Just... an old man carrying far too many secrets.

"I made your mother a promise."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"She lied to me."

Richard nodded sadly.

"I know."

"She manipulated me."

"I know."

"She helped destroy Claire's family."

"I know."

Ethan stepped closer.

"Then why are you still protecting her?"

Richard looked directly into his son's eyes.

"I'm not protecting Victoria."

A long silence followed.

"I'm protecting you."

Claire quietly entered the library.

Neither man had noticed her standing outside the door.

She looked at Richard.

"I've spent months believing you hated me."

Richard slowly turned toward her.

"I never hated you."

Claire frowned.

"Then why did you let Victoria treat me that way?"

Richard closed his eyes.

"Because I was a coward."

The answer surprised everyone.

"I spent years convincing myself that staying silent would keep everyone safe."

He laughed bitterly.

"But silence only gave evil more room to grow."

Claire felt tears fill her eyes.

For the first time...

Richard wasn't speaking as a businessman.

He was speaking as a man drowning in regret.

"Ethan."

Richard reached into the inside pocket of his jacket.

He removed an old envelope.

The paper had yellowed with age.

"I've carried this for thirty-one years."

Ethan accepted it carefully.

"What's inside?"

"A letter."

"From who?"

Richard hesitated.

Then answered.

"Your mother."

Ethan slowly unfolded it.

The date at the top read:

May 18, 1995.

His birth year.

He began reading.

Richard,

By the time you read this, I'll already be gone.

I know you'll be angry.

I know you'll hate me.

But Ethan deserves a father, even if you aren't the man who gave him life.

Ethan stopped.

His breathing became uneven.

He continued.

I never wanted to betray you.

Charles forced me into a choice I couldn't escape.

Claire looked toward Richard.

His eyes were closed.

As if he had memorized every word.

Ethan kept reading.

If Charles ever discovers Ethan survived...

...he'll never stop hunting him.

The room grew colder.

Richard whispered,

Please protect him.

Never tell him the truth unless there's no other choice.

Promise me he'll never know who his biological father is.

Because if Charles learns the truth...

...he'll kill the only man who ever truly loved me.

The letter ended there.

No signature beyond one name.

Victoria.

Claire looked stunned.

"Charles..."

"He forced her?"

Richard nodded.

"Years ago."

Ethan lowered the letter.

"So Charles isn't just after the company."

Richard shook his head.

"No."

"He destroyed lives long before he wanted the Callahan empire."

Across the city...

Charles Whitmore stood inside the executive boardroom of Whitmore International.

Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked Manhattan.

A massive portrait of Arthur Callahan hung on one wall.

His assistant entered.

"The board approved the acquisition."

Charles smiled.

"Excellent."

"And the media?"

"They'll announce tomorrow morning that Whitmore International intends to purchase controlling shares of Callahan Corporation."

Charles nodded.

"Perfect timing."

The assistant hesitated.

"There's one problem."

"What?"

"Ethan still controls enough voting rights to block the deal."

Charles smiled again.

"Not for long."

He opened a locked drawer.

Inside rested a sealed envelope.

Across the front were four handwritten words.

OPEN AFTER RICHARD DIES.

Meanwhile...

Marcus received an unexpected visitor.

Special Agent Daniel Brooks.

Daniel placed a classified FBI folder on the desk.

"I think you should see this."

Marcus opened it.

His expression immediately changed.

"What is this?"

"Military intelligence."

Marcus frowned.

"Why would the FBI have military records?"

Daniel remained serious.

"Because thirty-one years ago..."

"...Charles Whitmore wasn't a businessman."

Marcus looked at the file.

The first page displayed an old photograph.

A much younger Charles.

Standing beside several men in military uniforms.

One of them was circled in red.

Marcus leaned closer.

"Who is that?"

Daniel quietly answered,

"That's Ethan's biological father."

Marcus froze.

"What?"

Daniel nodded.

"We finally identified him."

Marcus looked down at the name.

His eyes widened.

"No..."

Daniel sighed.

"I had the same reaction."

Marcus whispered,

"He's supposed to be dead."

Later that night...

Ethan sat alone on the penthouse balcony.

Everything he believed about his life had been shattered.

Claire quietly joined him.

Neither spoke for several minutes.

Finally...

She rested her head against his shoulder.

"No matter who your father is..."

"...it doesn't change who you are."

Ethan smiled faintly.

"I wish I believed that."

Claire looked at him.

"I do."

He turned toward her.

"You've lost your family."

"So have I."

Claire gently took his hand.

"Then we'll build our own."

Ethan looked into her eyes.

For the first time in weeks...

he felt something stronger than anger.

Hope.

He kissed her forehead softly.

"We finish this together."

Claire smiled.

"Always."

The following morning...

Every television network interrupted regular programming.

BREAKING NEWS

The headline flashed across every screen in America.

WHITMORE INTERNATIONAL ANNOUNCES HOSTILE TAKEOVER OF CALLAHAN CORPORATION.

Employees flooded Callahan Tower.

Reporters surrounded the entrance.

Stock prices began falling.

Inside the chaos...

Richard quietly packed the last items from his office.

He looked around the room one final time.

Thirty years of his life.

Gone.

His secretary entered.

"Mr. Callahan..."

"What is it?"

"A courier just delivered this."

She handed him a black envelope.

No return address.

Richard immediately recognized the handwriting.

Charles Whitmore.

He slowly opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

A recent one.

It showed Ethan.

Claire.

And an elderly man sitting in a wheelchair.

Richard's face turned completely white.

His hands began trembling.

Because he recognized the old man instantly.

He whispered the name he hadn't spoken in over three decades.

"Michael..."

There was another note attached beneath the photograph.

Only one sentence.

"I found him before your son did."

Richard collapsed back into his chair.

His breathing became uneven.

Because Michael wasn't just Ethan's biological father.

Michael was the one man Charles Whitmore had failed to kill.

And now...

May you like

after thirty-one years in hiding...

Charles had found him again.
