CHAPTER 11 The Daughter No One Was Allowed to Know

CHAPTER 11
The Daughter No One Was Allowed to Know
Rain poured over the cemetery.
No one spoke.
Claire stared at the birth certificate in her trembling hands, unable to process what she was reading.
Father: Richard Callahan.
Mother: Emily Bennett.
The words blurred as tears filled her eyes.
"This... this can't be real."
Marcus carefully examined the document.
"The paper is authentic."
He turned it toward the fading light.
"The county seal is original."
Olivia looked at Ethan.
"If this is true..."
She couldn't finish the sentence.
Ethan did it for her.
"Then Dad had another child years before I was born."
Claire slowly looked up.
"My mother never told me."
Marcus nodded.
"She probably couldn't."
The group returned to the penthouse before midnight.
The metal box sat on the dining table.
Inside remained two unopened items.
The silver key.
The memory card.
Ethan picked up the memory card.
"If Thomas hid this..."
"...it contains something he wanted no one else to see."
Marcus inserted it into his laptop.
One folder appeared.
EMILY - PRIVATE
Claire held her breath.
Marcus clicked.
Dozens of scanned documents appeared.
Medical records.
Old photographs.
Letters.
Then a video file.
Recorded twenty-six years earlier.
The screen flickered.
A young Emily Bennett appeared.
She looked exhausted.
But she smiled gently at the camera.
"If you're watching this..."
"...then I couldn't protect you."
Claire covered her mouth.
It was the first time she had ever heard her mother's voice.
Emily looked directly into the camera.
"This message is for my daughters."
Claire froze.
"Daughters?"
Emily nodded in the recording.
"Claire..."
"...and my sweet little Ava."
The room went completely silent.
Olivia whispered,
"There were two children."
Claire stared at the screen.
"I had a sister..."
Emily continued.
"If Richard ever tells you he didn't know..."
"...don't believe him."
Ethan closed his eyes.
His chest tightened.
"He was there when Ava was born."
Claire couldn't breathe.
Emily wiped away tears.
"He loved her."
"For one beautiful week..."
"...he held his daughter every single day."
Then Emily's expression changed.
"But when his father found out..."
"...everything changed."
The video skipped forward.
Emily looked frightened.
"Arthur Callahan gave Richard an ultimatum."
Marcus paused the video.
"Arthur."
Ethan frowned.
"My grandfather."
Marcus nodded.
Emily's voice continued.
"'Choose the company..."
"...or choose us.'"
Claire whispered,
"My God."
Emily looked directly into the camera.
"Richard chose the company."
Ethan felt sick.
His father had abandoned his own child.
Not because he didn't love her.
Because he feared his father.
Emily continued.
"Arthur said Ava would never inherit anything."
"He said no one could ever know she existed."
Olivia lowered her head.
"Grandpa erased her."
Emily nodded through tears.
"They took her."
Claire's heart nearly stopped.
"Took her?"
Emily's voice broke.
"They told me she died."
Silence.
"But I never believed them."
The video ended abruptly.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Ethan whispered,
"So Ava never died."
Marcus slowly nodded.
"I don't think she did."
Claire looked at the birth certificate again.
"My sister..."
"has been alive this whole time."
At Callahan Manor, Richard sat alone in the library.
The room felt darker than usual.
Victoria entered without knocking.
"You've seen the news?"
Richard looked up.
"What news?"
Victoria tossed a newspaper onto the desk.
FBI REOPENS BENNETT INVESTIGATION
Richard sighed.
"It was inevitable."
Victoria folded her arms.
"No."
"It was preventable."
Richard looked at her.
"You still think hiding the truth would've solved everything?"
"It solved it for twenty years."
"No."
Richard shook his head.
"It postponed today."
Victoria's face hardened.
"You've become weak."
Richard stood slowly.
"I've become tired."
A long silence filled the room.
Finally, Richard whispered,
"I should've gone after my daughter."
Victoria stared at him.
"What?"
"I knew she wasn't dead."
Victoria's expression changed.
"You promised never to say that."
Richard looked toward the window.
"I heard her cry."
Victoria froze.
"The night Arthur took her away."
"I heard her."
His voice cracked.
"And I did nothing."
Meanwhile...
Charles Whitmore entered the basement where Thomas Bennett remained tied to the chair.
Thomas looked exhausted.
Charles placed the birth certificate on the table.
"You hid her well."
Thomas smiled weakly.
"You'll never find her."
Charles looked amused.
"You still don't understand."
He leaned closer.
"I don't need to find Ava."
Thomas frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Charles smiled.
"She's already found me."
Thomas's expression collapsed.
"No."
Charles nodded.
"She has worked for me..."
"...for almost five years."
Thomas stopped breathing.
Impossible.
Ava didn't know who she was.
She had grown up under another identity.
She couldn't possibly—
Charles interrupted his thoughts.
"She has no idea she's Richard Callahan's daughter."
Thomas whispered,
"Leave her out of this."
Charles laughed.
"I can't."
He picked up another file.
"You see..."
"...she's about to become CEO of one of the companies your families built."
Thomas's eyes widened.
"What?"
Charles calmly slid a photograph across the table.
Thomas looked down.
His face turned white.
Because he recognized the young woman instantly.
Not from twenty years ago.
From six months ago.
She had visited him once.
Using another name.
Another life.
She had no idea he was her father.
And now...
she was standing beside Charles Whitmore in the photograph.
Smiling.
Trusting him completely.
Thomas whispered in horror,
"No..."
Charles slowly stood.
"The funniest part?"
Thomas closed his eyes.
"You've already met her."
Across the city...
Ethan's phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
Again.
He answered.
A calm female voice spoke.
"Mr. Callahan?"
"Who's this?"
"My name is Amelia Ross."
Ethan frowned.
"I don't know anyone by that name."
The woman hesitated.
"I think..."
"...your father is mine too."
The line went silent.
Ethan felt every hair on the back of his neck stand up.
Because something in her voice...
felt strangely familiar.
And for reasons he couldn't explain...
Claire suddenly looked toward the phone with tears in her eyes.
As if...
without ever hearing the woman's voice before...
she somehow knew.
May you like
The sister she had spent twenty years believing was dead...
had just called Ethan.
