CHAPTER 12 The Sister Who Never Knew

CHAPTER 12
The Sister Who Never Knew
The room fell into complete silence.
Ethan tightened his grip on the phone.
"My name is Amelia Ross."
Her voice was calm, professional, almost emotionless.
Yet beneath that composure, Ethan could hear something else.
Fear.
Real fear.
"You said you think Richard Callahan is your father."
"Yes."
"Why?"
A long pause followed.
Finally, Amelia answered.
"Because someone tried to kill me yesterday."
Claire's eyes widened.
Ethan exchanged a quick glance with her.
"What does that have to do with my father?"
"They kept asking me the same question."
"What question?"
"'Where is the ledger?'"
Ethan's heartbeat accelerated.
"They think you have it."
"I don't."
"Then why are they after you?"
Another pause.
"They called me..."
Her voice trembled for the first time.
"'The rightful heir.'"
Claire slowly sat down.
The words Olivia had discovered inside the hidden safe echoed in everyone's minds.
Only the rightful heir may claim the truth.
Ethan spoke carefully.
"Where are you?"
"I can't tell you."
"Why not?"
"Because if anyone traces this call..."
"...I'll be dead before sunrise."
The line disconnected.
Nobody moved.
Marcus finally broke the silence.
"If she's telling the truth..."
Ethan nodded.
"She's Ava."
Claire covered her mouth.
"My sister..."
Marcus looked at the birth certificate again.
"The ages match."
"The timeline matches."
"The message from Emily matches."
Olivia whispered,
"She's been alive all along."
Claire stood near the window.
The city lights blurred through the tears in her eyes.
"I spent twenty years believing I was alone."
Ethan walked beside her.
"You aren't."
"I had a sister."
Her voice cracked.
"She grew up somewhere..."
"...thinking nobody wanted her."
Ethan gently wrapped his arm around her shoulders.
"We'll find her."
Claire looked at him.
"What if we're too late?"
He didn't answer.
Because he had begun asking himself the same question.
Meanwhile...
Amelia Ross sat alone in a small motel room outside Philadelphia.
The curtains remained closed.
Three different cell phones lay on the bed.
She had changed hotels six times in two weeks.
Changed rental cars four times.
She knew someone was following her.
She just didn't know who.
She opened a worn leather wallet.
Inside was the only photograph she had from childhood.
A little girl.
Around four years old.
Standing beside an older woman.
The woman's face had been torn away.
Only the child's face remained.
Amelia whispered,
"Who was I?"
A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.
Three knocks.
Then two.
The signal she had been expecting.
She slowly reached beneath the pillow and pulled out a handgun.
"Who is it?"
"It's me."
The familiar voice relaxed her slightly.
She unlocked the door.
A man in his sixties entered.
Gray beard.
Kind eyes.
She knew him only as...
Samuel.
"You shouldn't have called Ethan."
Samuel closed the door.
"There wasn't another choice."
Amelia looked frustrated.
"I don't even know if he's telling the truth."
Samuel sighed.
"He doesn't know the whole truth yet."
She stared at him.
"You do."
Samuel remained silent.
"You've always known."
Finally...
he nodded.
"Yes."
Back in New York...
Richard sat in his study, staring at an old baby bracelet hidden inside his desk drawer.
The tiny silver bracelet carried one engraved word.
AVA
He gently ran his thumb across the letters.
"I failed you."
A tear slowly rolled down his face.
The powerful businessman who had spent decades controlling billion-dollar negotiations now looked like a father drowning in regret.
A voice behind him interrupted the silence.
"You still think regret changes the past?"
Victoria stood in the doorway.
Richard quickly wiped away the tear.
"You shouldn't be here."
Victoria noticed the bracelet.
"So."
"You kept it."
Richard looked away.
"I couldn't throw it away."
Victoria laughed bitterly.
"You threw away the child."
Richard's face hardened.
"I didn't."
"No?"
Victoria stepped closer.
"You watched Arthur's men take her."
"You said nothing."
"You signed the papers."
Richard slammed his fist onto the desk.
"I thought she'd be safe."
Victoria stared at him.
"You lied to yourself."
At the FBI field office...
Special Agent Daniel Brooks studied the reopened Bennett file.
Something didn't fit.
Every financial record suggested massive fraud.
Yet every witness interview painted Thomas Bennett as an honest man.
His assistant entered.
"Sir."
"What is it?"
"We recovered another archive."
Daniel looked up.
"From where?"
"The old Callahan accounting department."
He opened the folder.
Inside was a payroll record from twenty-six years ago.
One employee name immediately stood out.
Samuel Ross
Daniel frowned.
"Ross..."
His assistant nodded.
"The same last name as Amelia Ross."
Daniel leaned back.
"No."
"It can't be coincidence."
That evening...
Marcus finally decrypted the remaining files from Thomas's memory card.
One encrypted document required a password.
After dozens of failed attempts...
Claire quietly said,
"Try my mother's birthday."
Marcus entered the date.
The file unlocked instantly.
Inside was a handwritten journal.
Thomas Bennett's personal diary.
The first entry read:
Arthur Callahan is building something bigger than a company.
The second entry:
Richard still believes he can stop him.
The third entry stopped everyone cold.
If Arthur discovers the child survived, he will never stop hunting her.
Ethan whispered,
"My grandfather wanted his own granddaughter dead."
Marcus shook his head.
"Not necessarily."
Claire frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Marcus continued reading.
The next sentence answered everything.
He doesn't want her dead.
He wants control of her inheritance.
Olivia looked confused.
"What inheritance?"
Marcus turned the page.
His face lost all color.
"Ethan..."
"What?"
Marcus swallowed hard.
"Your grandfather didn't own Callahan Corporation."
Silence.
"He held it..."
"...in trust."
Ethan frowned.
"For who?"
Marcus slowly looked at Claire.
Then at the birth certificate.
Finally he whispered,
"For Ava."
Nobody spoke.
For nearly a full minute.
Then Ethan shook his head.
"No."
Marcus handed him the legal documents.
"They're original."
Claire looked stunned.
"That means..."
Marcus nodded.
"If Ava is alive..."
"...she legally owns fifty-one percent of the Callahan empire."
Olivia gasped.
"My God."
Ethan slowly lowered the papers.
Everything suddenly made sense.
Arthur hadn't hidden Ava because he hated her.
He had hidden her because she was the legal owner.
Someone else had stolen what belonged to her.
Someone had ruled the empire using a lie.
Across the state...
Charles Whitmore poured himself a glass of whiskey.
One of his men entered.
"Sir."
"Report."
"Ethan has the journal."
Charles smiled.
"Good."
"And Amelia contacted him."
Charles nodded slowly.
"Even better."
The man looked confused.
"You're letting this happen?"
Charles walked toward the fireplace.
"They're finally assembling all the pieces."
"But won't they expose us?"
Charles chuckled.
"No."
"They're exposing Richard."
He raised his glass.
"And once father and son destroy each other..."
"...I'll take everything."
The man frowned.
"Everything?"
Charles turned.
"The company."
"The ledger."
"The inheritance."
A slow smile spread across his face.
"And my daughter."
The room fell silent.
His assistant stared at him.
"Your... daughter?"
Charles looked into the fire.
"Amelia doesn't know yet."
"But she isn't Richard Callahan's daughter."
He smiled.
"She's mine."
Miles away...
Amelia Ross suddenly woke from a nightmare.
She didn't know why.
But for the first time in her life...
May you like
she had the overwhelming feeling that everything she believed about herself...
was a lie.
