CHAPTER 18 The Truth Beneath the Scar

CHAPTER 18

The Truth Beneath the Scar

The words echoed inside Victoria's mind.

"...I'm going to cut it out of your son's body."

For the first time in over thirty years, the woman who had manipulated politicians, destroyed families, and never allowed herself to appear weak...

looked terrified.

She slowly backed away.

"You're lying."

Charles Whitmore tilted his head.

"Am I?"

Victoria instinctively glanced toward Ethan's childhood photograph sitting on Arthur's desk.

A tiny scar.

Just below Ethan's right collarbone.

Something she had spent decades pretending not to remember.

Charles noticed.

"There it is."

"The look of recognition."

Victoria whispered,

"Michael actually did it..."

Charles smiled.

"He had no choice."

Thirty-one years earlier...

St. Matthew's Hospital.

A violent thunderstorm raged outside.

A newborn baby cried in the maternity ward.

Victoria lay exhausted in bed.

Michael Donovan stood beside the infant.

Arthur Callahan entered the room without knocking.

"Is it done?"

Michael looked up.

"No."

Arthur's voice hardened.

"It must be."

Victoria frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Arthur ignored her.

Instead, he handed Michael a small metal capsule.

No larger than a grain of rice.

"The seventh authorization chip."

Victoria stared at it.

"What is that?"

Arthur finally answered.

"The future."

Michael shook his head.

"I'm not putting this inside a child."

Arthur stepped closer.

"You designed it."

"I designed a security system."

"Not this."

Arthur's expression became cold.

"If Charles ever gets all six keys..."

"...everything we've built disappears."

Michael looked down at the crying baby.

"There has to be another way."

Arthur quietly replied,

"There isn't."

Present day.

Victoria collapsed into Arthur's chair.

"You turned Ethan into a vault."

Charles corrected her.

"No."

"Arthur did."

Victoria looked sick.

"He was just a baby."

Charles nodded.

"Which made him the perfect hiding place."

Across the city...

Marcus carefully examined Ethan's old childhood medical records.

Thousands of pages had been digitized.

Nothing unusual.

Routine vaccinations.

School physicals.

Minor injuries.

Then one surgery report caught his attention.

Age: 3 months

Procedure: Emergency removal of foreign object

Marcus frowned.

"What?"

Claire looked over his shoulder.

The report was incomplete.

The final page had been removed.

Marcus immediately called the hospital archives.

Five minutes later...

The answer arrived.

"Those records were sealed by federal order."

Daniel Brooks looked up sharply.

"Federal?"

Marcus nodded.

"Only military intelligence had that authority."

Daniel slowly stood.

"My father."

Ethan listened quietly.

Without saying a word, he unbuttoned the top of his shirt.

Claire gently touched the small scar beneath his collarbone.

"I've seen this a thousand times."

She whispered.

"You always said it was from childhood surgery."

Ethan nodded.

"That's what Mom told me."

Marcus looked at the scar.

"It isn't where doctors usually operate."

Daniel frowned.

"You think..."

Marcus answered.

"I think Charles was telling the truth."

Meanwhile...

Richard remained imprisoned inside the aircraft hangar.

Charles returned carrying an old X-ray film.

He held it toward the light.

The tiny outline of a metallic object appeared beneath an infant's collarbone.

Richard closed his eyes.

"You kept it."

Charles smiled.

"I've searched for this X-ray for twenty years."

Richard whispered,

"You'll never get near Ethan."

Charles laughed.

"I don't need to."

He placed another photograph on the table.

A recent surveillance image.

Claire leaving the penthouse.

Alone.

Richard's face drained of color.

"What have you done?"

Charles calmly answered,

"I've already begun."

Claire had insisted on visiting Emily Bennett's grave alone.

She needed time.

Time to think.

Time to speak to the mother she barely remembered.

Rain gently fell across the cemetery.

She knelt beside the headstone.

"I found my sister."

She whispered.

"I just wish you were here."

A voice behind her interrupted.

"Your mother would be proud."

Claire turned.

An elderly woman stood beneath a black umbrella.

Kind eyes.

Silver hair.

Claire had never seen her before.

"I'm sorry..."

"Do I know you?"

The woman smiled softly.

"No."

"But I knew Emily."

Claire slowly stood.

"You did?"

The woman nodded.

"I made her a promise."

"What promise?"

"To protect both of her daughters."

Claire froze.

"My sister..."

The woman smiled.

"Is alive."

Claire's eyes filled with hope.

"You know where she is?"

The woman hesitated.

"Yes."

Before she could continue—

A black van sped through the cemetery gates.

Three armed men jumped out.

"Get down!"

The elderly woman pushed Claire behind the headstone.

Gunfire shattered the quiet afternoon.

The woman pulled a handgun from beneath her coat with practiced precision.

Claire stared in shock.

"You have a gun?"

The woman smiled faintly.

"I was hoping I'd never need it again."

She fired twice.

One attacker fell.

The others took cover.

Claire whispered,

"Who are you?"

The woman answered without taking her eyes off the attackers.

"My name..."

"...is Eleanor Donovan."

Claire frowned.

"Donovan?"

The woman nodded.

"Michael is my husband."

Claire's heart stopped.

"And Ethan's..."

Eleanor smiled sadly.

"Biological mother."

Claire's world tilted.

"What?"

Gunfire erupted again.

Eleanor grabbed Claire's hand.

"No time."

"We have to leave."

At the penthouse...

Ethan's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered immediately.

"Claire?"

Instead...

he heard Charles Whitmore.

"You should drive to Saint Gabriel Cemetery."

Ethan's blood ran cold.

"Where's my wife?"

Charles chuckled.

"You'll find her."

A pause.

"If you arrive before she's buried."

The line disconnected.

Ethan ran toward the elevator.

Marcus, Daniel, and Olivia followed.

"No police," Ethan ordered.

"Charles wants us distracted."

Daniel loaded his service weapon.

"Then we go ourselves."

As the elevator doors opened...

Richard's name flashed across Ethan's phone.

He answered.

"Dad?"

Richard's voice was weak.

"Listen carefully."

"Eleanor is with Claire."

Ethan stopped.

"How do you know that name?"

Richard ignored the question.

"Protect her."

"Why?"

A long silence.

Then Richard whispered the truth that changed everything.

"Because Eleanor Donovan..."

"...is the woman who gave birth to you."

The call disconnected.

Ethan stood motionless.

Claire believed Eleanor was Michael's wife.

Richard claimed Eleanor was Ethan's biological mother.

Both couldn't be true.

Unless...

May you like

The greatest lie of all...

had begun long before Ethan was born.
