CHAPTER 7 The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

CHAPTER 7
The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
The photograph sat on the table like a weapon.
Ethan couldn't take his eyes off it.
The man staring back at him was older.
His hair was gray.
His face carried twenty years of pain.
But there was no mistaking him.
Thomas Bennett.
Claire's father.
The man everyone believed was dead.
The man whose disappearance destroyed two families.
The man who had supposedly abandoned his daughter.
Alive.
Ethan looked at the file again.
THOMAS BENNETT - ALIVE
His hands tightened.
"This is impossible."
Marcus Reed stood across from him, equally shocked.
"I agree."
"Then explain it."
"I can't."
Ethan looked at the photograph.
"Someone has been lying for twenty years."
Marcus nodded.
"And now we need to find out who."
Claire was still asleep when Ethan returned to the penthouse.
He stood in the doorway of their bedroom.
Watching her.
For the first time since they met, he felt afraid.
Not of losing her.
Of hurting her.
Because if Thomas Bennett was alive...
then everything Claire had believed about her past was wrong.
And Ethan knew one thing.
Some truths didn't set people free.
Some truths destroyed them.
He gently woke her.
"Claire."
Her eyes opened slowly.
"What happened?"
He sat beside her.
"I found something."
The fear appeared immediately.
"What?"
Ethan didn't know how to say it.
So he simply showed her.
The photograph.
The moment Claire saw it...
everything stopped.
Her face lost all color.
Her lips parted.
But no words came.
Ethan watched her carefully.
"Claire?"
She touched the picture with shaking fingers.
"No."
A whisper.
"No, that's not possible."
"You recognize him."
She looked at Ethan.
"It's my father."
The room became silent.
"Claire..."
She covered her mouth.
"He looks exactly the same."
Ethan frowned.
"Exactly?"
She nodded slowly.
"My father would be older."
She looked at the photo.
"But this picture..."
Her voice broke.
"This was taken recently."
For the next hour, Claire said nothing.
She sat by the window, holding the photograph.
Ethan wanted to comfort her.
But he knew she needed answers more than comfort.
Finally, she spoke.
"When I was sixteen..."
Ethan listened.
"My father told me something strange."
"What?"
"He said if he ever disappeared, I should never believe the first story I heard."
Ethan's expression changed.
"He knew."
Claire nodded.
"He knew someone would try to rewrite what happened."
She looked at him.
"And they did."
They spent the rest of the day investigating.
Marcus traced the photograph.
The metadata had been removed.
The location was hidden.
Whoever created the file knew exactly what they were doing.
"This wasn't leaked by accident," Marcus said.
Ethan looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
"Someone wanted you to find it."
Claire looked worried.
"Why?"
Marcus answered:
"Because Thomas Bennett being alive changes everything."
That evening, Ethan received a message.
Unknown number.
Again.
Only three words.
"Come alone. Midnight."
Below it was an address.
Claire saw his expression.
"Who is it?"
"I don't know."
"You can't go."
Ethan looked at her.
"If this is my father, or someone connected to him..."
"It's a trap."
"Maybe."
Claire stood.
"Then why would you go?"
Because Ethan knew something.
The person behind all of this had spent twenty years hiding.
Now they were finally reaching out.
That meant they were confident.
Or desperate.
Either way...
they had answers.
"I need to know the truth."
Claire looked at him.
"Then I'm coming with you."
"No."
"Ethan."
"It's too dangerous."
She stepped closer.
"You don't get to protect me by leaving me outside the truth."
The words stopped him.
Because she was right.
For years, people had made decisions for Claire.
Her father.
His family.
Everyone except herself.
Ethan finally nodded.
"Okay."
At midnight, they arrived at the address.
An abandoned warehouse near the waterfront.
The kind of place where secrets disappeared.
Ethan parked the car.
Before leaving, he looked at Claire.
"Stay close."
She nodded.
Inside, the warehouse was empty.
Too empty.
Their footsteps echoed.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
"Claire."
She froze.
Because she knew that voice.
A voice she hadn't heard in twenty years.
A voice from childhood.
A voice she thought she would never hear again.
"Dad?"
A figure stepped forward.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
Thomas Bennett.
Claire couldn't move.
Neither could Ethan.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Thomas whispered:
"My little girl."
And Claire broke.
Not because she was weak.
Because for twenty years...
she had mourned someone who was standing right in front of her.
She ran toward him.
Thomas held his daughter tightly.
"I'm sorry."
The words came immediately.
"I am so sorry."
Claire cried against him.
"Why?"
Her voice shook.
"Why did you leave me?"
Thomas closed his eyes.
"Because staying would have killed you."
Ethan watched silently.
But something bothered him.
The question that had haunted him all day.
Why hide?
Why let Claire suffer?
Why let the world believe he was dead?
Finally, Ethan stepped forward.
"You have a lot to explain."
Thomas looked at him.
A sad smile appeared.
"You look like your father."
Ethan's expression hardened.
"Don't."
Thomas nodded.
"You're right."
A pause.
"You deserve the truth."
They moved to a private room inside the warehouse.
Thomas looked exhausted.
Like a man who had spent decades running.
"My disappearance wasn't because of the money."
Ethan crossed his arms.
"Then why?"
Thomas looked at Claire.
"Because I discovered something."
"What?"
"The Callahan empire wasn't built the way everyone believes."
Ethan already knew that.
"But what does that have to do with you?"
Thomas took a deep breath.
"Your grandfather and I discovered something together."
Ethan frowned.
"My grandfather?"
Thomas nodded.
"Your grandfather created a hidden financial network."
"Illegal?"
"Yes."
Silence.
"He used companies to move money, hide assets, and control competitors."
Ethan looked at him.
"And my father?"
Thomas looked away.
"Your father found out."
"What happened?"
"He wanted to expose it."
Ethan was surprised.
"My father?"
Thomas nodded.
"Richard was not always like this."
That sentence shocked Ethan.
"Then what changed?"
Thomas looked directly at him.
"Power."
A pause.
"Your grandfather gave Richard a choice."
"What choice?"
"Protect the family name..."
"Or destroy it."
Claire held her father's hand.
"Who tried to kill you?"
Thomas became quiet.
Then he answered.
"The same person who attacked you."
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
"What?"
Thomas looked at him.
"Your mother."
The room froze.
"No."
Ethan immediately rejected it.
But Thomas didn't look away.
"Victoria knew everything."
"You're lying."
"I wish I was."
Ethan stepped closer.
"Do you have proof?"
Thomas reached into his jacket.
He removed a small envelope.
"I kept this for twenty years."
He handed it to Ethan.
"Because I knew one day you would need it."
Ethan opened it.
Inside was a document.
A contract.
A payment agreement.
The signature at the bottom was clear.
Victoria Callahan.
And next to it...
was a payment receipt.
For hiring someone.
To make Thomas Bennett disappear.
Ethan stopped breathing.
Because the person who had attacked his wife...
was the same person who had destroyed Claire's family.
His own mother.
At that exact moment, across the city...
Victoria Callahan watched security footage from the warehouse.
She saw Ethan.
She saw Claire.
She saw Thomas.
Alive.
Her face remained calm.
But her hand trembled.
Because the one thing she feared most had happened.
Thomas Bennett had returned.
And now...
the truth she buried twenty years ago was coming back.
Victoria picked up her phone.
"He's alive."
A man's voice answered.
"Then we finish what we started."
Victoria looked at the screen.
"No."
A pause.
"This time..."
Her eyes hardened.
"We don't make him disappear."
May you like
She whispered:
"We destroy Ethan instead."
