CHAPTER 13 The DNA That Changed Everything

CHAPTER 13

The DNA That Changed Everything

For several minutes, no one spoke.

The revelation that Amelia might not be Richard Callahan's daughter left everyone questioning every piece of evidence they had uncovered.

Ethan leaned back in his chair.

"We've been chasing one truth after another."

Marcus nodded.

"And every time we think we've reached the end..."

"...another lie appears."

Claire folded her arms.

"So how do we know what's real?"

Marcus looked around the room.

"We stop trusting stories."

"We trust evidence."

The following morning, Marcus arranged an emergency meeting with Dr. Rebecca Hayes, one of New York's leading forensic geneticists.

She listened carefully as Ethan explained everything.

When he finished, she remained silent for a moment.

Then she asked only one question.

"Do you have biological samples from everyone involved?"

Ethan exchanged a glance with Claire.

"We have hair from Richard."

Claire nodded.

"I still have one of my father's old toothbrushes."

Marcus added,

"And Olivia agreed to provide a sample."

Dr. Hayes smiled slightly.

"Good."

"What about Amelia?"

Ethan sighed.

"We don't know where she is."

Rebecca leaned forward.

"Then we start with what we have."

Three hours later...

The laboratory began processing the DNA.

Machines quietly analyzed strand after strand of genetic material.

Ethan watched through the observation window.

Claire stood beside him.

"You look nervous."

"I am."

She reached for his hand.

"What if we discover something we can't fix?"

Ethan smiled sadly.

"We've already crossed that line."

Meanwhile...

Richard Callahan walked alone through Central Park.

For the first time in decades, there were no assistants.

No security.

No meetings.

Only silence.

He stopped beside a quiet lake.

A familiar voice spoke behind him.

"You finally look your age."

Richard turned.

Thomas Bennett stood several feet away.

Alive.

Free.

Richard frowned.

"I heard Charles took you."

Thomas smiled faintly.

"He did."

"Then how are you here?"

"He underestimated an old man."

Richard couldn't help but smile for the first time in weeks.

"You always were stubborn."

Thomas looked at him carefully.

"I didn't come here to talk about the past."

Richard nodded.

"I know."

Thomas stepped closer.

"Charles is moving faster."

"I know."

"He wants the ledger."

"I know."

"He also wants Ava."

Richard's expression darkened.

"I know."

Thomas studied him.

"Then why are you still protecting Arthur's secrets?"

Richard lowered his head.

"I'm not protecting my father anymore."

"Then who?"

Richard looked directly at Thomas.

"My son."

Back at the laboratory...

Dr. Hayes entered the waiting room carrying a folder.

Everyone immediately stood.

"I have the first results."

Claire held her breath.

Rebecca opened the report.

"Claire Bennett..."

"...is unquestionably Thomas Bennett's biological daughter."

Claire nodded quietly.

She had expected that.

Rebecca turned the page.

"Olivia and Ethan are full siblings."

Again, no surprise.

Then Rebecca hesitated.

Marcus noticed.

"What's wrong?"

Rebecca looked toward Ethan.

"Richard Callahan is..."

"...not your biological father."

The room became completely still.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Ethan blinked.

"I'm sorry..."

"I think I misheard you."

Rebecca slowly shook her head.

"The test was repeated three times."

She handed Ethan the report.

"The probability of paternity is zero."

Claire whispered,

"No..."

Olivia stepped backward.

"That's impossible."

Rebecca looked genuinely sympathetic.

"I'm afraid it isn't."

Ethan stared at the report.

Every memory of his childhood flashed through his mind.

His father teaching him to ride a bicycle.

His father attending school events.

His father teaching him business.

His father telling him,

"One day this company will be yours."

His entire identity suddenly felt uncertain.

Marcus carefully asked,

"Could there have been a laboratory error?"

Rebecca shook her head.

"No."

"The science is conclusive."

Claire gently touched Ethan's arm.

He didn't react.

His eyes remained fixed on the report.

If Richard wasn't his father...

Then who was?

At that same moment...

Victoria Callahan sat in her private office.

Her personal assistant entered nervously.

"Mrs. Callahan..."

"What?"

"The DNA tests have been completed."

Victoria slowly closed her eyes.

"So."

"It finally happened."

The assistant looked confused.

"You already knew?"

Victoria stood and walked toward the window.

"Yes."

"For thirty-one years."

Across town...

Charles Whitmore smiled as he received the laboratory update.

"They know."

His assistant nodded.

"Ethan just learned Richard isn't his father."

Charles poured two glasses of whiskey.

"The first domino has fallen."

The assistant frowned.

"Should we move now?"

Charles shook his head.

"Not yet."

"Why?"

"Because Ethan is about to ask the only question that matters."

The assistant waited.

Charles smiled.

"'If Richard isn't my father..."

"...who is?'"

Back in the laboratory...

Olivia finally broke the silence.

"I'm sorry."

Ethan looked at her.

"Why are you apologizing?"

She began crying.

"Because Mom knew."

Ethan frowned.

"What?"

"I heard them arguing once."

"When?"

"I was twelve."

Olivia wiped away her tears.

"Dad kept saying..."

"'He deserves the truth.'"

"And Mom answered..."

"'He can never know who his real father is.'"

Claire felt her stomach drop.

Ethan whispered,

"My entire life..."

"...was built on another lie."

Late that evening...

Richard returned to the manor.

He wasn't surprised to find Ethan waiting.

His son stood in the library holding the DNA report.

Richard looked at it.

Then at Ethan.

"So."

"You know."

Ethan's voice was steady.

"No yelling."

"No accusations."

"I just want one answer."

Richard nodded slowly.

"I'll answer."

Ethan placed the report on the table.

"Are you my father?"

Richard closed his eyes.

For nearly twenty seconds...

he couldn't speak.

Finally...

"No."

The single word shattered the silence.

Ethan swallowed hard.

"Did you know?"

"Yes."

"For how long?"

"Since the day you were born."

Ethan laughed bitterly.

"So everyone knew."

"No."

"Who?"

Richard looked at the floor.

"Only your mother."

"And me."

Ethan's hands clenched into fists.

"Then tell me."

"Who is my father?"

Richard slowly lifted his eyes.

Pain filled them.

"I promised your mother..."

"...I would never say."

Ethan stepped forward.

"My entire life has been a lie."

Richard whispered,

"I know."

"Tell me."

"No."

"Tell me!"

Richard's voice finally broke.

"I can't!"

Silence.

Then Richard said something Ethan never expected.

"Because if you learn his name..."

"...Charles Whitmore will kill you."

Ethan froze.

"What?"

Richard's eyes filled with tears.

"Charles isn't hunting you because of the company."

A long pause.

"He's hunting you..."

"...because you're the only person standing between him and your real father."

The room fell deathly quiet.

For the first time...

May you like

Ethan realized he wasn't just caught in someone else's war.

He had been born into it.
