CHAPTER 15 The Father Who Never Stopped Looking

CHAPTER 15

The Father Who Never Stopped Looking

Richard raced out of his office.

For the first time in decades, he ignored the executives calling his name, the reporters waiting downstairs, and the hostile takeover threatening his company.

None of it mattered anymore.

Only one thought echoed through his mind.

Michael is alive.

And Charles had found him first.

Across town, Ethan watched the breaking news from the penthouse.

Every major network carried the same headline.

WHITMORE INTERNATIONAL LAUNCHES HOSTILE TAKEOVER OF CALLAHAN CORPORATION.

Claire muted the television.

"He's forcing you into a corner."

Ethan nodded.

"No."

He looked at the screen.

"He's distracting us."

Marcus walked into the room carrying a laptop.

"I think Ethan's right."

He placed it on the coffee table.

"I traced Charles's financial activity."

"And?"

Marcus zoomed in on a map.

"While everyone was watching Wall Street..."

"...his private security teams were moving elsewhere."

Claire leaned closer.

"Where?"

Marcus tapped one location.

A rehabilitation center in the Catskill Mountains.

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

"Who lives there?"

Marcus looked at him.

"Michael Donovan."

Silence.

Richard's whispered name from the mysterious photograph echoed in Ethan's mind.

Michael.

At that exact moment...

Richard's car sped north on the interstate.

His hands gripped the steering wheel tightly.

His phone rang.

Victoria.

He ignored it.

It rang again.

Then again.

Finally, he answered.

"What?"

Victoria's voice was cold.

"Turn around."

"No."

"You know exactly where Charles wants you."

Richard kept driving.

"I'm done following his rules."

Victoria's tone hardened.

"If you go there..."

"...Ethan will learn everything."

Richard whispered,

"He deserves to."

Victoria slammed something on her desk.

"No."

"He deserves the life we gave him."

Richard laughed bitterly.

"We gave him lies."

Then he ended the call.

Meanwhile...

In a quiet rehabilitation center surrounded by pine trees, an elderly man sat in a wheelchair reading a novel.

His silver hair had thinned with age.

His left arm barely moved.

But his blue eyes remained sharp.

A nurse approached.

"Mr. Donovan."

He smiled kindly.

"Yes?"

"You have visitors."

Michael looked toward the entrance.

Three black SUVs slowly entered the parking lot.

His smile disappeared.

He whispered to himself,

"So..."

"It finally begins."

Back in Manhattan...

Special Agent Daniel Brooks arrived at the penthouse carrying another classified file.

Ethan opened the door.

"You look like you haven't slept."

Daniel smiled faintly.

"I haven't."

He entered and placed the folder on the table.

"I received authorization to show you this."

Marcus immediately recognized the government seal.

"What is it?"

Daniel opened the file.

"Operation Sentinel."

Claire frowned.

"I've never heard of it."

"You weren't supposed to."

Daniel removed an old photograph.

It showed five people standing together in military uniforms.

Arthur Callahan.

Thomas Bennett.

Charles Whitmore.

Richard Callahan.

And one man Ethan had never seen before.

Michael Donovan.

Ethan stared at the photograph.

"My father."

Daniel nodded.

"We believe so."

Daniel continued.

"Thirty-two years ago..."

"...these five men created a covert financial network."

Claire looked confused.

"I thought Arthur created it."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"Arthur financed it."

"Charles managed it."

"Thomas documented it."

"Richard tried to shut it down."

Ethan frowned.

"And Michael?"

Daniel looked directly at him.

"He tried to expose everyone."

The room became silent.

Marcus slowly understood.

"So Charles framed Thomas..."

Daniel nodded.

"To protect himself."

"And Arthur protected Charles."

"Exactly."

Claire whispered,

"My father spent twenty years hiding..."

"...because he knew the truth."

Daniel looked at her sympathetically.

"Yes."

The rehabilitation center suddenly lost power.

The lights flickered once.

Then darkness.

Michael calmly closed his book.

He had expected this day for decades.

Footsteps echoed down the hallway.

Heavy.

Organized.

Professional.

The door slowly opened.

Charles Whitmore entered alone.

Still elegant.

Still smiling.

"Hello, Michael."

Michael looked at him without fear.

"You've gotten old."

Charles laughed.

"So have you."

A long silence passed.

Finally, Charles sat across from him.

"Thirty-one years."

Michael nodded.

"I wondered how long it would take."

Charles placed a pistol on the table between them.

"I came to offer you a choice."

Michael smiled.

"I already know the choices."

"Do you?"

Charles leaned forward.

"Tell me where the original ledger is."

Michael slowly shook his head.

"No."

Charles sighed.

"You always were stubborn."

Michael answered calmly,

"And you always underestimated fathers."

Charles frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Michael looked directly into his eyes.

"You think Ethan needs me."

Charles remained silent.

Michael smiled.

"He doesn't."

"He already became the man I hoped he would."

Charles picked up the pistol.

"He doesn't even know you're his father."

"I know."

"You sacrificed thirty-one years."

Michael nodded.

"So he could live."

Back on the highway...

Richard's phone rang again.

This time...

Ethan.

Richard answered immediately.

"Dad."

Richard closed his eyes.

It was the first time Ethan had called him that since learning the truth.

"I'm listening."

"Where are you?"

Richard hesitated.

"North."

"Going to Michael."

Richard gripped the steering wheel.

"How do you know?"

"I know everything."

"No."

Richard whispered.

"You don't."

Ethan's voice remained calm.

"Then tell me."

Richard looked at the empty road ahead.

"I can't."

"Dad."

Richard smiled sadly.

"You still call me Dad."

"You raised me."

Silence.

"No DNA report changes that."

Richard's eyes filled with tears.

"Ethan..."

"You'll always be my father."

Richard finally broke.

A tear rolled down his face.

"Thank you."

Then his expression suddenly changed.

In his rearview mirror...

Three black SUVs appeared.

Closing fast.

The first vehicle accelerated.

Slamming into Richard's car.

Metal screamed against metal.

The steering wheel jerked violently.

Richard fought to keep control.

"Ethan."

His voice became urgent.

"Listen carefully."

"Dad?"

"If anything happens to me..."

"Don't let Charles find Michael."

Another violent impact.

The windshield cracked.

"Dad!"

Richard struggled to breathe.

"He isn't after the ledger."

Ethan frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Richard looked into the mirror again.

The SUVs surrounded him.

"He wants something only Michael knows."

"What?"

Richard whispered the final words before the call disconnected.

"He wants the sixth name."

The line went dead.

At the rehabilitation center...

Charles pointed the pistol directly at Michael.

"I'll ask one last time."

Michael smiled.

"You'll never find him."

Charles narrowed his eyes.

"Him?"

Michael realized his mistake.

Charles slowly lowered the gun.

A satisfied smile spread across his face.

"So..."

"It wasn't just five men."

Michael remained silent.

Charles laughed.

"There were six."

He stood.

"And thanks to you..."

"I finally know."

Michael closed his eyes.

Thirty-one years.

Three decades of sacrifice.

One single word...

had undone everything.

Charles walked toward the door.

Before leaving, he turned back one final time.

"You protected your son."

"But you just betrayed your oldest friend."

The door closed.

Michael whispered to the empty room,

"I'm sorry..."

Because somewhere...

May you like

The mysterious sixth man...

had just become Charles Whitmore's next target.
