Chapter 1: The Locked Door

Chapter 1: The Locked Door

“Nobody leaves this house tonight,” Nathan said, his voice dropping an octave. It wasn't the voice of the forgiving philanthropist who donated wings to children's hospitals; it was the voice of the ruthless developer who dismantled corporate empires before breakfast. The air in the dining room grew thick, heavy with the sudden, suffocating weight of his authority.

Claire stared at him, the delicate mask of her face slipping just enough to reveal the cold, calculating gears turning beneath. The soft candlelight from the remaining fixtures cast harsh, angular shadows across her cheekbones. “What did you say?”

“I said no one leaves. Not Maria. Not Lily.” Nathan stepped past the shattered crystal on the floor, the shards crunching beneath his polished leather shoes. He pulled his cell phone from his tailored suit jacket, his eyes locked on his wife. “And not you.”

He dialed a two-digit extension. “Marcus. Seal the estate. Lock the front gates. Cut the perimeter alarms to internal lockdown mode. No one comes in, and absolutely no one leaves without my explicit verbal authorization.”

The dining room descended into a suffocating silence, broken only by the rhythmic drumming of the storm against the towering windows. Lily buried her face in Maria’s apron, her tiny shoulders shaking with silent sobs, while Eleanor sat frozen at the head of the table, her frail chest rising and falling in shallow, panicked breaths. Claire’s eyes narrowed into terrifying, venomous slits. The elegant dinner was officially over. The hunt had begun.
