Deep in the labyrinth of the mansion’s industrial kitchen, Maria huddled inside the walk-in pantry, her hand clamped tightly over Lily’s mouth. The little girl was trembling violently, hot tears streaming over Maria’s fingers. The smell of dried herbs and cold steel offered no comfort.
Heavy, deliberate boots crunched on broken china just outside the pantry door. A blinding flashlight beam swept through the wooden slats of the door, slicing through the darkness.

“Come out, come out, little maid,” Marcus taunted, his voice echoing menacingly off the stainless steel appliances. “I just want the kid. Hand her over, and maybe Claire lets you walk away. Keep hiding, and I'll make sure neither of you ever sees the sun again.”
Maria’s eyes darted around the dark shelves, her heart hammering against her ribs. Her fingers brushed against the cold, heavy handle of a massive cast-iron skillet used for searing steaks. She wasn't just a maid tonight. She was a mother cornered by a wolf.
