As Nathan typed on the glowing keyboard, deliberately messing up passwords to stall for every possible second, he noticed a faint, metallic scraping sound above them. A subtle shift in the air vent just over Claire’s head.
Maria had used the servant's back-access corridors—the narrow, dusty passages she cleaned every single week. She knew the hidden skeleton of this house better than the security chief ever could.
Nathan hit Enter. “It’s processing. It’s an international wire. It takes two full minutes to clear the firewall.”

Before Marcus could turn to leave, the heavy brass grating of the air vent above plummeted downward. Maria had unscrewed it from the inside using a coin. The heavy metal grate, weighing nearly twenty pounds, smashed directly onto the crown of Claire’s skull.
