Flashing red and blue lights pierced through the rain-streaked windows, painting the study in chaotic colors. The police, heavily armed and triggered by the silent duress code Nathan had covertly entered during the biometric scan, were finally swarming the iron gates of the estate.
Nathan turned around and hugged Maria and Lily, a genuine embrace of deep gratitude. “You saved us. Both of you. You will never have to work another day in your life, Maria. I promise you that.”

He turned to grab Claire, to zip-tie her hands before the police entered, but his blood ran cold. The floor where she had fallen just moments ago was completely empty.
Only a smear of dark blood stained the expensive Persian rug. The French doors leading out to the tempestuous gardens were thrown wide open, the velvet curtains violently blowing inward, soaking the floor with rain.
