The pantry door was violently yanked open. Marcus’s flashlight instantly blinded Maria, pinning her like a deer in headlights. But before he could raise his weapon to aim, Maria lunged forward with a primal scream and swung the iron skillet with every ounce of her adrenaline-fueled strength.
It connected with Marcus’s gun-hand wrist with a sickening, audible crack. The gun clattered to the floor, sliding far under the commercial oven. Marcus bellowed in pain and fury, backhanding Maria across the face with his good hand. She flew backward into the metal shelves, sending a cascade of heavy cans of crushed tomatoes raining down upon them both.

Lily squeezed past the towering man, darting out of the kitchen and into the darkened corridors. Marcus snarled and lunged for Maria’s throat, but a shadow burst through the swinging doors and tackled him violently from the side. Nathan had arrived.
