Chapter 5: The Distraction

“You won’t get a single dime from me,” Nathan said, his mind racing through tactical scenarios. He was three feet from the dinner table, five feet from Marcus, and staring down the barrel of a loaded Glock 19.

“Oh, I assure you, I will,” Claire purred, stepping safely behind Marcus. “Marcus, secure the old woman and the maid. We’ll see how stubborn Nathan is when his dear mother is bleeding out on the marble.”

Nathan didn't wait for her to finish the threat. With a brutal, sweeping kick, he launched the heavy silver platter resting on the edge of the table straight up into the air. He followed it with a violent shove of the table itself. The steaming roast chicken, boiling drippings, and heavy silverware exploded against Marcus’s chest and face.

Marcus roared in agony as the scalding grease hit his eyes. His finger twitched, and the gun discharged wildly. The bullet struck the massive crystal chandelier above them. Glass shattered like shrapnel, cutting the wiring and plunging the dining room into semi-darkness, lit only by the strobe-light flashes of lightning from the storm outside.

“Run!” Nathan bellowed.
