Chapter 10: The Vault
Nathan and Marcus crashed into the stainless-steel prep tables, sending pots and pans clattering to the floor in a deafening racket. Nathan was athletic, kept in shape by daily boxing routines, but Marcus was a trained mercenary killer. The security chief quickly gained the upper hand, sweeping Nathan's legs and slamming his head brutally against the edge of the counter.
“You’re soft, Whitmore!” Marcus grunted, wrapping his massive hands around Nathan’s throat, squeezing the life out of him. “You build towers, but you bleed just like anyone else!”
Suddenly, a gunshot rang out. The deafening crack froze them both in place.

At the kitchen doorway stood Claire, holding Marcus’s discarded backup piece. The barrel was pointed directly at Lily, whom she had caught in the hallway. The little girl was paralyzed in the beam of Claire's flashlight.
“Enough playing around,” Claire said coldly, her face a mask of absolute detachment. “Nathan, you are going to get up and walk with me to the study. You are going to open the biometric vault. Or I put a bullet in the child’s head, and we'll see if Maria wants to open it for me.”
