Maria screamed, a raw sound of sheer terror, and pulled Lily behind a heavy oak serving cart. Eleanor gasped, clutching her chest as if her heart might give out right there at the table.
Claire smoothed the front of her cream silk dress, her momentary panic vanishing like vapor. She walked over to Marcus, resting a manicured hand affectionately on his armed shoulder.
“I told you he was too sharp for his own good,” Claire murmured to the security chief, though her eyes were locked on Nathan. Her smile returned—only this time, it was a predator’s grimace, utterly devoid of warmth. “I really did try to do this the quiet way, Nathan. Gaslight the old bat into an asylum, transfer the offshore accounts, and leave you with a tearful, heartbreaking goodbye letter. But your bleeding heart just had to listen to the help.”

“You’ve been stealing from the company,” Nathan realized, the disconnected pieces of the past year suddenly snapping together. The missing ledgers, the strange late-night calls.
“Fifty million,” Claire corrected, her eyes gleaming with greed. “But it’s heavily encrypted in a ghost account. And I need your biometric scan to finalize the transfer. I was going to drug your scotch tonight, but since we're awake, we'll do this the hard way.”
