The estate’s power grid abruptly failed, drowning the mansion in absolute, suffocating blackness. The emergency generators, which should have kicked on instantly with a familiar hum, remained dead—Marcus had already sabotaged them.
Nathan pressed his mother against the cold velvet wallpaper of the east corridor, listening to the heavy boots of Marcus stomping out of the dining room. “Mom, listen to me,” Nathan whispered, his breathing heavy but controlled. “You need to keep moving through the gallery to the panic room behind the library. Do you remember the keypad code?”

“Nathan, I’m so sorry,” Eleanor sobbed quietly, her frail hands trembling as she clutched his jacket. “I should have told you. I was just so scared you'd think I was crazy.”
“You have nothing to be sorry for. You are the bravest woman I know,” he said, gripping her frail shoulders to ground her. “Go. Lock the door and do not open it for anyone but me. I have to find Maria and the girl. They don’t know the blind spots of this house like we do.”
