Chapter 10 - The Rescue
Hours passed slowly under the brutal heat of the midday sun. The small motor had run out of fuel long before noon. Sarah used a piece of shiny foil from the rations as a mirror. She flashed the sunlight across the ocean hoping to catch an eye. Suddenly a low hum vibrated across the quiet surface of the water. A United States Coast Guard cutter appeared on the distant horizon. Sarah grabbed the flare gun and fired a bright red streak into the sky. The flare popped and drifted down on a tiny white parachute. The massive white ship altered its course and headed straight for her. Tears of relief mixed with the dried salt on her weary face. The rescue team tossed her a life ring and pulled her aboard. They wrapped her in a thick thermal blanket and offered hot tea. The captain asked her what had happened out there on the water. She told them her name and claimed she fell overboard by accident. She knew the syndicate had spies inside local law enforcement. She had to handle the destruction of this family on her own terms.
